ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
March 29, 2005
Last week, it looked like the snowbirds had flown north. This week,
however, we were pleasantly surprised to see so many at our meeting. We had a full
house again today. President Bill Adams presided; Steve Bates gave the
invocation, being thankful for our lovely weather. Jimmy Weatherspoon,
accompanied by the musical genius of Bruce Williams, led our singing. On such a lovely
day, of course, we had to sing our theme song: Smile!
Bruce Wenzel welcomed about eleven visiting Rotarians. He also commented on
our upcoming Delray Affair. He mentioned that it originally covered about
two blocks, in the early sixties. It is always scheduled the week after
Easter, hoping to keep our visitors another week. Today, it has grown to about
650 vendors, covering most of downtown Delray Beach. Dave Armstrong, who is
heading up this year's Rotary Booth, is pleading for everyone to come out and
support our efforts. As you know, it is our largest fundraiser for
scholarship funds for Atlantic High Students. We are always located in the Veteran's
Park area, near the bridge. Even if you cannot work, come by and buy a hot
dog, and give your moral support!
Con Fecher paid for a banner that he was unable to give away. He got his
money back, however, when he held the winning ticket to draw from the deck, but
did not win the pot.
We had make ups from Eric Meyer, Dave Harden and Pat Owen. We thank each of
you.
Sergeant at Arms, Candace Etzler, collected a total of $112.00. John Arnold
donated $20.00 for a successful surgery. We were glad to see Frank (our
head waiter) back with us.
Georgina Kerr-Jarrett, with an upbeat note, informed us the market is up.
We will be holding our upcoming Bingo Party on Thursday, May 5. We are
looking for a committee to help put this together. Please contact me with your
ideas. We need silent auction items; it is never too early to donate these.
Leo Phillips introduced our speaker, Alexander "Sandy" Simon. As all of you
know, he is the "baby" brother of our members, Ernie and Roy Simon.
Sandy was born and raised in Delray Beach, thus, knowing and writing about
the history of South Florida, specifically Delray Beach, Boynton Beach and
Boca Raton, in his book Remembering. Before starting to write, Sandy was a land
developer in this area. He has served on many boards; some are The Morikami
Museum; Visions 2000, etc.
In 1993, Sandy suffered a massive stroke, thus, changing courses in his
life. During his recovery, he wrote Remembering; A Stroke of Genius, (which is
being used in medical schools as a text book); The History of Highland Beach.
(I hear he is now writing a steamy novel!)
This year, Sandy, Roy, Ernie and Charlie Simon were bestowed the prestigious
award from Old School Square, The Life Achievement Award. As most of you
know, Sandy Simon is one of our past recipients of our Service Above Self Award,
from our Rotary Club.
This time, Sandy spoke on "Pirates of the Caribbean." This was the melting
pot for these famous pirates. Although his time was limited, he kept us in
"stitches" telling us about the famous pirates, such as Blackbeard. He also
informed us, his book, The History of Highland Beach, is a combination of James
Michner and Mel Brooks. He has so much more to tell us; let's have him back
again soon!
Next week: Reeve Bright will be our speaker. (For those of you that do not
know, he is Anne Bright's spouse.)
REMINDER: DELRAY AFFAIR, SEE YOU THERE; APRIL 1, 2, 3.
