ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
April 5, 2005
In the absence of our president, President-elect Leo Phillips was at the
helm. Our invocation was beautifully offered by Nancy King. Con Fecher did a
magnificent job of leading the group in our "spelling lesson," R-O-T-A-R-Y,
and the ever happy song, Smile. I hope you noted all the "toe tapping tunes"
played by Bruce Williams.
Bruce Wenzel welcomed about half a dozen visiting Rotarians. Kurt Godfrey
had two guests. Dave Richards donated $31.00, and Mark Denkler donated
$17.00, just to get us to sing Happy Anniversary to each of them. Bill Scottie
presented our banner to Mickie Dodski, of S. Bend, IN. Mark Denkler and Sylvia
Pecaro did make ups; thanks to both of you.
We were informed that Wally Doud, a former, long time member, has just gone
through bypass surgery this week. Wally, we wish you the very best; you are
in our prayers.
Fred Bonardi, with a smile on his face, gave us the stock market report. It
was UP today. Fred also served as Sergeant at Arms, collecting $182.00.
We were told that Cliff Ripley will be presenting a scholarship this year at
his Scholastic Scholarship Awards Banquet, held at the Breakers, in the name
of Rotary Club of Delray Beach. Cliff, we thank you for your recognition of
our group. We wish you a wonderful evening with these outstanding young
people.
Dave Armstrong deserves a standing ovation for his work at the helm, of our
Delray Affair booth. Steve Bates is a good coach, right Dave? Dave thanked
all his workers for their participation. We especially thank those who
weathered the storm on Saturday; you people are true Rotarians.
Leo Phillips introduced our guest speaker, Reeve Bright, a man who many of
us know as "Anne Bright's husband."
Reeve does have his own identity, however. He is a native of Philadelphia,
PA. After graduation from Hobart College, in NY, he moved to Florida in 197
2, going to Miami Law School. He and Anne married in 1975, producing three
boys; then three grandchildren.
Presently, Reeve is vice-chair of the National Lupus Foundation, having
served as chairman for three years. He also is past chairman of Delray's Lupus
Foundation Board, serving eight counties.
He also serves as chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Hebron School, in
Maine; his alma mater.
Reeve has served as chairman of the delightful Boynton/Delray Beach Boat
Parade, for the past twenty-two years. He also serves on the Palm Beach Airport
Authority, where he has been the chairman for the past three years.
He is a founding member of the Sunrise Kiwanis, and a past president. He is
also a member of St. Joseph Church, and has served on its vestry for fifteen
years and senior warden for eight years.
He is, and has been the attorney for the Republican Party of Palm Beach
County, since 1988. This was the subject he chose to speak on. He told us he
became a Republican when he rode an elephant, at the age of eight! He gave us
some very interesting stories of what goes on at "Election Headquarters,"
during an election. He has met many distinguished political leaders. He also
had the pleasure of meeting with our current president in January 2004, at a
rally in Palm Beach Gardens.
One of Reeve and Anne's highlights, however, is when they had the pleasure
of meeting with Pope John Paul II. He "lit up" when telling us of this
wonderful event. He told us that for once, he was rendered "speechless."
According to Anne's testimonial, Reeve still finds time to be a loving
husband and a wonderful father, grandfather, and run a law practice, here in
Delray Beach. (I think this man must have more than 24 hours in his day; I must
consult him.) Thank you, Reeve.
Next week: We will have Deane Demky, from the Red Cross, as our guest
speaker.
Bingo time is fast approaching us. Thursday, May 5, is our next fundraising
event, at Ellie's Flamingo Room. I need the help of all of you. My only
commitment so far, is Pat Archer, and Jimmy Weatherspoon. HELP! Please call,
or e-mail me ASAP. (278-0493) Thanks!
