ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
April 12, 2005
President Bill Adams was back today, leading the meeting. Before that, he
was heading up another monthly Board of Directors Meeting, at 7:30 a. am.
Hack Allen gave the invocation. Then, Jimmy Weatherspoon, (he found his
glasses) led the singing.
Sam Altdoerffer was very generous; upon celebrating his birthday, he donated
$79.00. I'm sure that was no indication of his age. Bernie Shapiro has
been married 62 years; he donated $25.00. We thank both of these men for their
contribution, and wish them the very best.
Bruce Wenzel welcomed about six visiting Rotarians. Bill Scottie introduced
his guest, Rick Grant. We also had Arthur Reef's guest, Don Learch, with us.
Fred Bonardi had "not so good" stock market news; the market was down today.
Bill Talen, feeling bad that he could not help out at the Delray Affair,
donated $100.00 to the club. Bill, our consensus is, "don't ever work!" We
sure appreciate your generosity.
Our happy Sergeant at Arms, Tony Allerton, collected a total of $282.00
today. Wow!
Leo Phillips read us an article published in the Wall Street Journal today,
citing the anniversary date of April 12, 1955, when Dr. Jonas Salk introduced
the Polio Vaccine to the world. The article also praised Rotary Clubs
throughout the world for their participation in helping to eradicate this
dreadful, debilitating disease. It was a lovely recognition for Rotary. (I had the
pleasure of meeting Dr. Jonas Salk, at the ribbon cutting ceremonies of the
new Children's Hospital and Research Center in Columbus, OH, in the mid 80's.
What a treat for me.)
Our Assistant District Governor, Betsy Owen, announced that April is
"Volunteer Month." We have been asked, as individuals, to log our volunteer hours,
whatever purpose they serve. Please do this and give it to our president at
the beginning of next month.
BINGO! BINGO! MAY 5, ELLIE'S DINER, FLAMINGO ROOM; 6:00 P.M. I am asking
you to please put this on your calendar. This is our last big event of the
season. As you know, it rained on Saturday, during the Delray Affair. It
became a "wash out." We need each of you to attend the Bingo Party, and help make
up the difference. Jim Pignato has consented to again be our "distinguished
emcee." Jimmy Weatherspoon will be calling the Bingo. We have already
secured our top prize of $500.00, from Fidelity Federal Bank, according to
Branch Manager, Shirley Clark. Then there's Lyn Huckle, coming through with
another $250.00. This sure makes it more interesting, huh? I know you don't want
to miss out on this. We also, need silent auction prizes. Who will help
out there? Please don't force me to come to you and beg for them. Invite all
your friends to help support Rotary and our scholarship fund. I will be
asking for a positive show of hands at next week's meeting!
Leo Phillips introduced our guest speaker, Dean W. Dimke, Executive Director
of Greater Palm Beach Area Chapter of the American Red Cross. He began his
career with the Red Cross over sixteen years ago, while living in his home
state of Kentucky. After moving through the ranks, in many phases and places,
his position as Executive Director includes Palm Beach, Hendry, Glades and
Okeechobee Counties.
Mr. Dimke related there are 870 American Red Cross Chapters nationwide. He
noted 5.3 million is needed this year. He related how the Red Cross helped
during our 2004 Hurricane Season. Locally, there were 68 shelters, housing
approximately 37,000 people. These shelters remained open for three months.
They served 860,000 meals. There were volunteer nurses on hand, as well as
counselors. With 870 volunteers helping out locally, he stated: "our community
came through."
Mr. Dimke explained to us how important it is to take the free First Aid
Class, once a year, involving four to five hours. Our closest headquarters is
825 Fern Street, West Palm Beach, FL 33401. Telephone: 561-833-7711. Or,
_chapterhq@redcross-pbc.org_ (mailto:chapterhq@redcross-pbc.org) . They can
give you the information on this class.
Wally Doud, this is another get well note from all your friends at Rotary
Club of Delray Beach. We sure miss you down here!
Next Week: RYLA
