ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
May 3, 2005
Our meeting was well attended today, despite the fact it is now May.
However, Con Fecher and Sam Altdoeffer are leaving us for the summer. Con bid his
farewell by donating a whopping $100.00 to our club today. We thank you for
your generosity, and hope you enjoy the mountains of NC.
President Bill Adams presided over the meeting; he also led the singing.
Jim Pignato gave the invocation.
Today, Bruce Williams truly put on a performance! He had all of us wanting
to get up and dance.
Bruce Wenzel, in his "demure garb," welcomed six visiting Rotarians. We
thank Pat Archer, Lou Cucci and Gerry Meeks for doing make ups.
Georgina Kerr-Jarrett gave the stock market report, trying to sound
optimistic.
Sergeant at Arms, Roy Simon collected a total of $164.89.
President Bill Adams announced that our club will be presenting our fifteen
$1,000.00 scholarships to Atlantic High School students on May 18, 2005, at
6:45 p.m. at Atlantic High School. It would be a nice gesture from our club
to have a good turnout of members for this event. This is what we work so
hard to achieve each year; fundraisers for our scholarships.
Today, we had a very informative presentation from Dr. Robert Zoeller,
Ph.D., professor at FAU. Dr. Zoeller spoke on Diabetes (Glucose Intolerance).
His statistics were astounding.
He informed us that 95% of diabetics in this world are Type II; only 5% are
Type I. Of course, this means that there will be much less research on Type
I.
There are so many contributing factors involved with Diabetes. Trying to
keep your weight down; your blood pressure down; your cholesterol down;
exercise at least moderately; these are all factors for fighting diabetes.
Diabetes is a very debilitating disease, if left untreated. It can include
Retinopathy, Renal failure and amputation. So........walk thirty minutes
daily, and eat sensibility. If there is Diabetes in your family, have your
blood sugar checked regularly.
John Arnold failed to pick the Ace; therefore, the "Green Hat" exceeds
$300.00 now.
Next Week: Our speaker will be Pedro Del Sol, Executive Director of Migrant
Association of South Florida.
Happy Mother's Day to all you Mothers.
