ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
May 10, 2004
For many of us, our day began with a Board of Directors meeting, led by
President Bill Adams.
At noon, President Adams led our regular weekly meeting. Our invocation was
well done by Harvey Brown, Jr. Steve Rich led our singing. As always,
Bruce Williams entertained all of us.
We had a trio of birthdays that really added to our "kitty." Ernie Simon
donated $80.00; Dave O'Connell donated $71.00; Cliff Ripley donated $79.00.
I'm sure this is no indication of their age, however. Gentlemen, we appreciate
your generosity, and wish you a very healthy, happy birthday.
Kurt Godfrey donated $26.00, in honor of his anniversary. Bill Talen paid
us $20.00, to get permission to leave for the summer. Have a good summer
Bill; hurry back.
Bruce Wenzel welcomed our visiting Rotarians, which is beginning to dwindle,
since many of them are leaving for the summer. Make ups were done by Bill
Talen (aboard ship; how fun), Nancy Owen, Pat Owens and Gerry Meeks. Bob
Erickson had Mimi Hutchison as his guest. We are always happy to see Don Thorpe,
DVM with us. ( I hear he is tired of climbing the mountains; hope he will
stay with us.)
Georgina Kerr-Jarrett gave the stock market report, indicating the market is
"suffering from whiplash."
Sergeant at Arms Fred Bonardi was happy to announce our record "cache" for
the day: $360.00. Again, we thank each of you contributors for your
generosity.
President Adams made the following announcements:
Delray Affair net profit: $4,647.61 (As you remember Saturday was a
"washout.")
May 18, 6:45 p.m., Atlantic High School; our club, (along with many other
area organizations) will be presenting our ten chosen top students with
scholarships. Please attend in support of our club.
Thursday, May 12, a tour of The Beacon Center will take place at 4:00 p.m.
Please meet at CCCC, on Lake Ida Road, to take a tour of the facility.
If you have not turned in your total of volunteer hours (for any volunteer
service you have done in April) please call Sally at: 649-1658. She needs to
turn this in immediately to our Asst. Gov. Betsy Owen.
Today, our speaker was Mr. Pedro del Sol, Chief Executive Officer of the
Migrant Association of South Florida. This organization provides healthcare to
over 6,000 migrants, laborers and the underserved community. Prior to this
appointment, Mr. del Sol served as a volunteer.
He spent twenty-seven years working with two international companies,
Sensormatic and IBM.
For more than 25 years, Caridad Asensio has helped thousands of migrant farm
workers. In 1992, with the help of volunteers, she opened the Caridad
Health Clinic in a double-wide trailer. On the day the clinic opened, nearly 300
people waited to be seen.
This was a good start, but only the beginning of the story. With the help
of sincere and generous benefactors, the clinic grew. In 1997, the Migrant
Association of South Florida and the Caridad Health Clinic found a permanent
home with the completion of the Count and Countess de Hoernle Pavilion. It is
located on 6.8 acres of land in west Boynton Beach. The facility provides
free medical, dental, educational and outreach services to migrant farm worker
families.
The heart of this is the volunteers who support various dental, medical,
educational, outreach and other programs, as well as the daily operations. They
continue to need medical and dental professionals, tutors, translators and
general office volunteers. They are asking for volunteers; please call:
561-737-6336, Ext. 116. Email: _delsolp@caridad.org_ (mailto:delsolp@caridad.org)
. Also you may visit the website: _www.caridad.org_ (http://www.caridad.org)
.
Next week: We will feature the "song and dance duo" of Simon and Allerton.
(Actually, Ernie Simon and Tony Allerton will give us a brief history of The
Delray Beach Playhouse, and an update on the Children's Theatre.)
