ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
May 17, 2005
President Bill Adams presided over yet another fabulous meeting. Our newest
"Daddy," Rev. Roger Richardson, gave the invocation. (Sure sounded like a
professional to me; good job.) Jimmy Weatherspoon, after locating his
glasses, led the singing. Of course, as always, our own professional musician,
Bruce Williams, entertained us with his "danceable" music.
Bruce Wenzel, wearing his signature pink blazer, welcomed two visiting
Rotarians. Even though the numbers are dwindling for the summer, he stated: "the
quality is still there." Joyce Lunsford had her daughter, Melody, visiting
with us. Pat Owens had her friend, Nancy Hess with her. Leo Phillips did two
make ups; thanks Leo; welcome home. Inga Talmon paid for a banner, but
there was no new visitor to give it to.
Georgina Kerr-Jarrett gave a "mixed bag" report on the stock market. The
consumer index is still up, however.
Sergeant at Arms Fred Bonardi gathered in a total of $83.00 today, sounding
a bit disappointed, after his whopping total of last week, which was a
record. He reported five AWOL's.
On Wednesday, 18, our Rotary Club is presenting 15 scholarships to Atlantic
High School students in a ceremony at the school (along with other service
clubs in our area). This is our main presentation each year. Mark Denkler and
his committee have the task of looking over many applicants each year.
Mark, we thank you and your committee for a job well done.
Our guest speaker(s) today were our own Ernie Simon and Tony Allerton. They
spoke on The Delray Beach Playhouse. Ernie spoke on the history of the
playhouse, with many humorous tidbits of its history.
In 1947, the "Little Theater of Delray" began at St. Paul's Episcopal Parish
Hall Stage. Its next move was to Delray Civic Center, where the present
Delray Library stands. One of its problems was that it was next door to the
Delray Volunteer Fire Department. This could be very "alarming" at times.
In 1952, The Delray Beach Playhouse, Inc. signed a long term lease for a
"muck" wasteland on Lake Ida, where our beautiful playhouse now stands. It was
started with limited funds, and a labor of love, from many of our
residents.
Ernie praised Joyce Lunsford for her 38 years of volunteer service with the
Delray Beach Playhouse, serving as box office manager for 28 years.
For the last three years, there has been a "Ernie Simon Scholarship Fund,"
awarding $1,000.00 scholarships each year to deserving students, interested
in the theater, such as, costuming, set designing, etc. The first year, there
were two recipients; last two years, there were three recipients. I know
Ernie is very proud of this achievement.
Tony Allerton gave us an update on the Children's Workshop/Theater, headed
up by Dolly Workman. Last week, there was a ground breaking ceremony, to
build the Children's Theater, which they hope will be ready next year. It will
cost a total of two million. It will adjoin the existing theater, but will be
for children's plays only. Our County Commissioner Mary McCarty worked for
and acquired $850,000.00 of this money from Palm Beach County. Phase I of
this project will seat 160. The purpose of this is to teach children poise,
self-esteem, among its many other assets.
We thank Ernie and Tony for this great program and updates on what's going
on at the Delray Beach Playhouse.
Next week: Our speaker will be Jon Grocki, Community Resource Specialist for
Child and Family Connections.
The Board of Directors has approved, and is proposing three new members.
They are: Mimi Hutchison, Interior Designer, sponsored by Leo Phillips;
Dana Rushing, Director Cornell Institution Rehabilitation Medicine,
Bethesda, sponsored by Bob Erickson; Harvey Brown, Jr., sponsored by Mark Denkler.
We are excited to propose, and welcome these vibrant people to our club.
