ROTARY RAMBLINGS

ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

May 24, 2005

President Bill Adams presided over yet another exciting meeting.

At the door, we all were greeted by Pat Owens' smiling face. It is so nice
to have such a cordial welcome. Then, there was music by Bruce Williams.
The group sitting at the table, as you enter, are so cheerful that you are
eager to give them your money!

Pat Archer gave our invocation. Jimmy Weatherspoon led us in favorite songs.

LULA's BACK! Lula Butler is back with us; we wish to welcome her. Lady you
have been missed!

Steve Bates was congratulated on his birthday, and also his marriage of ten
days; he was all smiles. He donated $51.00 for his birthday, and $50.00 for
his ten day anniversary.  Steve, we sure wish  you the very best;
congratulations!

Bruce Wenzel welcomed three visiting Rotarians, as well as visitors with
members. There were three "Tennessee Vol Fans" attending. We had make ups by
Lyn Huckle, Nancy Owens, Roger Richardson and Lou Cucci. There were three
AWOL's; shame!

Sergeant at Arms Candace Etzler, gathered in a total of $182.00 today.

We all applauded Nancy Owens on her retirement from teaching and being
school principal for so many years, helping to make a difference in our children's
lives; thank you, Nancy.

President Bill Adams told us about presenting our scholarship recipients
with our scholarships on May 18, at Atlantic High School. Today, we were
honored to have seven of these young people with us, thanking us for our
scholarships. They were: Jessica Shoe, who will be attending Florida State University,
majoring in Elementary Education; Queanh Phan, attending Florida Atlantic
University, majoring in Pre-Medical/Biology; Shelly Yu, University of Central
Florida, majoring in Journalism; Samuel Eduard, University of Florida,
majoring in Biochemistry (pre-med); Lauren Garroway, University of Florida,
Geological Sciences; Brad L'Herron, University of S. Florida; Aliya Bonar, Hampshire
College.

After listening to these young leaders of our community of tomorrow, I
realized what a terrific job our scholarship committee had done. They are Mark
Denkler, Steve Bates, Robert Erickson, Dave O'Connell and Bill Adams.
Gentlemen, we thank you for your excellent choices, and your hard work.

President Adams announced that we will be receiving our "dues" notice
shortly. Please respond ASAP.

Leo Phillips presented our guest speaker, Jon Grocki, Community Resources
Specialist for Child and Family Connections, the lead agency for community
based care in Palm Beach County. For several years, Jon had the responsibility
for the management of the Community Resources Program for the Florida
Department of Children and Families. He joined the staff of Child and Family
Connections in July of last year, with the goal of extending and developing special
partnerships between CFC and all elements of our community.

At this time, there are 277 foster homes in Palm Beach County, housing about
630 children. There are 312 awaiting adoption.

Mr. Grocki's goal is to strengthen families through preservation and
reunification, and its mission of providing a safe living environment, permanency,
and a sense of stability for the children of Palm Beach County.
