ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
May 31, 2005
Where was our "Fearless Leader" today? I guess he is allowing
President-elect Leo Phillips get used to holding the reins. In a few weeks, Leo will be
our president, when we elect new officers.
Gerry Meeks gave a lovely invocation. Steve Rich led us in singing.
At this time, I want to send out a request. Bruce Williams has informed me
that his job at the Seagate will be ending soon, due to their closing. He
has asked that if anyone knows of a new venue for his music, please contact him
at: 561-496-4841. As we all know, he is truly a professional musician, and
graces our meetings with his music weekly.
Gay Vela is celebrating her "twenty-ninth" birthday; donating $29.00 to the
club. Happy Birthday Gay!
Bruce Wenzel welcomed the visiting Rotarians. He also welcomed our youngest
guest, ever; Sarah Evelyn Richardson, eight weeks old. The proud parents
are Rev. Roger and Deborah Richardson. What a beautiful child!
We also acknowledge many guest supporters of our guest speaker.
Georgina Kerr-Jarrett gave the stock market report. She reported the market
is down today, but consumer confidence is up.
Sergeant at Arms Tony Allerton gathered in $88.00 today. This included his
five dollars, for having his picture in the newspaper, associated with the
Delray Beach Playhouse. Good article, Tony.
Arthur Reef has asked for a leave of absence, due to his wife's illness.
Arthur, we will keep you two in our prayers. Please keep us informed of her
progress.
This is the second publication for membership: Harvey Brown, Jr., Mimi
Hutchinson, and Dana Rushing. We welcome each of you, and look forward to working
with you.
Rev. Roger Richardson introduced our guest speaker today. She was Linda
Tarry-Charde. She is an educator in New York. She is an ordained minister at
Riverside Church of NY. She has served on many academic boards. She heads up
"Project People Foundation," a 501 C 3 tax exempt foundation. Her mission
is to work with women, youth and children, "living in margins," with
inadequate health and education.
In January 1995, she headed up a program to South Africa, furnishing black
dolls to the children of South Africa. With much help, they furnished 15,000
dolls in one year. She and her group have taught the women of South Africa
to make these dolls.
Ms. Tarry-Charde's current mission is to furnish uniforms for the children
of South Africa, so they may attend school. It is mandatory to wear uniforms,
in order to go to school. There are more than 500,000 children unable to go
to school because their family cannot afford the required uniform. The cost
of the uniform is only $60.00, the average income for most families living
in townships is only $240.00 a year. Education, the key to a better life for
these children, becomes a "dream deferred." All hope is vanquished, unless
there are uniforms. Your gift of one uniform ($60.00) serves as a passport to
education.
