ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
June 7, 2005
President Bill Adams was back from his "white water rafting" vacation,
looking well rested. He will soon be off again for the International Rotary
Convention in Chicago, on June 17.
Hack Allen gave the invocation. Bruce Wenzel welcomed our visiting
Rotarians. Fred Bonardi presented Steve Dooley, of Frankfort, KY with our banner.
Make ups were done by Dave Harden, Nancy Owens and Pat Owens.
Dave O'Connell had his favorite "paint partner" (Paint up Delray Projects)
with him today; his grandson, Rafe O'Connell.
Mark Denkler introduced another of our scholarship recipients, Christopher
Love. He has been in the IB Program at Atlantic High School, and will be
attending MIT. He hopes to major in a Scientific Career. President Bill Adams
also read a thank you letter from another of our scholarship recipients,
Jessica Shoe.
Bill and Charlotte Adams have been "entertaining" another of our exchange
students from Brazil, Dani Campos. They readied her for her trip out west,
shared with many other exchange students, from all over the world. Our club
wishes to thank them for opening their home to these students.
Our guest speaker today was brought in by Ken Peltzie. He is also a friend
of Bruce Williams; he is Fred Schott. Mr. Schott works at the Deaf Service
Center/Hearing Wellness Center of Palm Beach County, for almost ten years. He
is Program Coordinator of Client and Community Services, and Outreach and
Education Coordinator. Mr. Schott also teaches Sign Language for the center
and has taught Sign Language at Lynn University.
Mr. Schott gave alarming statistics on hearing loss. He informed us that
deafness is the number one birth defect; one out of one thousand is deaf. In
Palm Beach County, there are 150,000 people with hearing loss, with 11,000
profoundly deaf.
Communication is a basic human need. He quoted the most famous deaf (and
blind) person, Helen Keller: "My blindness cuts me off from things; deafness
cuts me off from people."
Mr. Schott informed us of the free telephone equipment available to deaf
impaired, through the Deaf Service Center, to qualified Florida residents (by
appointment). "Hearing loss is everyone's loss." For more information, or
appointments, call: 561-278-6444.
Next week our guest speaker will be our own Tony Allerton, speaking on the
Crossroads project.
Next Tuesday morning, June 14, at 7:30 a. m. will be our monthly Board of
Directors meeting, in the Marilyn Room, Ellie's Diner. All members are invited
to attend. Our new slate of officers will be installed on June 28.
