ROTARY RAMBLINGS

ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

June 14, 2005

Today, President Bill Adams presided over his last board of directors
meeting, and his last noon meeting. (Next week, he will be traveling to Chicago
for the Rotary Convention.) We all want to thank him for wonderful Rotary
leadership this year. He is a true Rotarian, having given his very best as our
president. Bill, we thank you, and Charlotte, for all you have done for our
club, and for Rotary.

Ernie Simon gave our invocation today. Jimmy Weatherspoon led us in
patriotic singing, since today is Flag Day. We sang Happy Anniversary to Ron Backer
and Barbara, celebrating 21 years; congratulations; he donated $21.00 to the
club; thanks.

President Adams welcomed visiting Rotarians Rex Taylor and the "Island
Boy," Jeffrey Dennis, of New Providence, Nassau, Bahamas.

Sergeant at Arms Candace Etzler, collected $114.00 today. This was a good
amount, from a small group. Gay Vela paid for a banner she was unable to give
away. Tony Allerton, the celebrity, had his picture in the newspaper again,
costing him another $5.00.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: It has been requested that you make two separate checks for
dues and donation to Rotary Foundation. It makes Shirley Clark's job much
easier. If you have already combined the two, she will handle this.

Dave Armstrong has asked that the club assign a member for each month of the
upcoming year, to be responsible for one month of speakers. It has been
suggested that member either be a speaker, or select a club member, to tell a
bit about his or her life, such as hobbies, work, etc. This would be a great
way to get to knowing our members. We have already had four volunteers; they
are Jimmy Weatherspoon, Bob Erickson, Tony Allerton and Ernie Simon. We only
need eight more!

Ernie Simon announced that we have an anonymous donor of $1,000.00,
challenging a matching $1,000.00, for the Rel Moorcroft Scholarship Fund. Come on,
we can do it!

At the Board Meeting, it was decided that our Rotary Club donate $5,000.00
to the new Delray Beach Library, payable over a three year period. This will
give our club a prestigious place of recognition, for many years to come.
This will be dedicated to a "Reading Room." We already have $2,000.00 of this
commitment.

Our guest speakers today were Tony Allerton and Susan Miller. They spoke on
behalf of the Crossroads Club. Tony Allerton is the president of the
Crossroads Club; Susan is Executive Director, for six years. Crossroads had its
first AA Meeting Christmas Eve 1982. Tony, in his soothing voice, boasted
about his 23 years of sobriety. Tony we congratulate you. He applauded Bruce
Williams for his 35 years of sobriety; Bruce we congratulate you.

Tony told us there are more attendees for NA than AA, in this day. There
are 500 individuals attending 100 meetings weekly at Crossroads. This has
prompted them to expand their facilities. They exist on voluntary contributions,
Publix, and available funds from local service clubs, and help from our city
of Delray Beach. They will soon be building their new facility , west of
I-95, on the south side of Lake Ida Road. They hope to be in this facility by
May 2006.

After three years of convincing our local school board, Tony was able to
take his program of Prevention into the local schools. He was able to share his
experiences with Nancy Owens' school first. Last year, they were able to
make 113 presentations, including five high schools.

President Bill Adams presented Tony and Susan with a check for $500.00, from
our Rotary Club. We all appreciate the good work Tony Allerton does in
this town; he sure is a guy who "gives back to his community." Tony, we salute
you for your good works.

Next week, our speaker will be Lori Durante, speaking on Lifestyles and
Fashion History.

Please mark your calendar for our special Officers Installation meeting,
June 28.

The green hat is growing, and growing! Kurt Godfrey failed to pick the Ace,
so we are now down to 34 cards, and a pot of around $400.00; let's all get
aboard!
