ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
July 5, 2005
At 7:30 a. m., President Leo Phillips held his first Board of Directors
meeting, which was well attended. At noon, he held his first meeting as
president. Lynn Huckle met and warmly greeted each of us at the front door.
Gerry Meeks gave a very patriotic invocation, reminding us to be thankful
for the freedom we enjoy. Jimmy Weatherspoon led us in singing, while Bruce
Williams entertained us on piano. We sang Happy Birthday to Frank (head waiter
at Ellie's Flamingo Room). Steve Rich had only one visitor to greet.
Fred Bonardi, "wearing two hats," first gave us a very positive stock market
report; the market was up! As Sergeant at Arms, he collected a total of
$52.00. As a reminder, one of our members has challenged us to match his (or
her) $1,000.00, for the Rel Moorcroft Scholarship Fund. We have until the end
of the year; let's show that we can do this!
We are working on our update of the membership "blue book." If you have not
had your picture made, or want an updated picture, please contact Art
NeJame, at Palm Beach Photographic Centre, Tue., Wed., Thu., and Sat., 9-6, or see
him at our meetings for an appointment. Art will make the pictures, then the
updates will be added.
Kurt Godfrey and Pat Archer are on the committee for the Miracle League.
There will be a news conference on July 15, at Miller Park, supporting a new
facility for the league. This is a longtime supported effort of Rotary.
Since the UPS truck did not deliver the "Rotary Awards" last week, in time
for our meeting, President Phillips gave out the 100% attendance pins today.
Heading this list was Ernie Simon, with 38 years perfect attendance; second
was Bill Arnst, with 29 years perfect attendance; third was Gerry Meeks with
17 years. About a dozen, or so, others of us trailed along behind. He
presented Bill Adams with the "Past President" gavel plaque. In turn, Bill
presented him with the "official" president's gavel.
Today was another exciting landmark; President Phillips inducted two
terrific new members; Harvey Brown, Jr., and Mimi Hutchison, accompanied by her
sponsor, Dr. Don Thorpe. (Dr. Thorpe recalled his last sponsorship was in 1958,
with John C. Bordman.) We will be looking forward to hearing from both of
these people, and learning more about them, in the near future.
Congratulations! Welcome! (Harvey, I am sure your father is smiling on your decision, to
walk in his shoes.)
Today, I am posting the names of two more new prospects: Sue Miller,
Director at Crossroads, and William Morse, new partner in Ray Ripley's Accounting
Firm.
Our guest speaker today was "Past President" Bill Adams. He shared some of
his experiences and showed pictures of his trip to the Rotary International
Convention, in Chicago. He noted there were 40,247 registered attendees, from
165 countries. He thanked us for sending him and Charlotte to the "Windy
City" for this wonderful Rotary occasion. Not only was he impressed with the
convention, but also with Chicago.
Bill then presented a slide show; the works of our member, Bob Erickson, an
official photographer for Rotary. Bob's photos encompassed so many of the
represented cultures attending the convention, and participants in the "Rotary
Parade." He has been very busy since his return, with already 800 orders
for his pictures. We thank both of you for such an entertaining program.
The next convention will be in Sweden/Copenhagen, in June 2006. Get your
bags packed!
The green hat is now up to $579.00 and growing, since Stormi did not get the
Ace!
