ROTARY RAMBLINGS

ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

July 12, 2005

Whoops! we are into our second meeting of the new year, and President
Phillips has skipped town! (Actually, his trip was pre-planned.) Past President
Bill Adams, with a full year of leading the group, did another good job
today. Hack Allen gave the invocation. Jimmy Weatherspoon, in his effort to help
us "think cool," sang Jingle Bells!

Bruce Wenzel greeted our visitors, Mike Guberman, of Skokie, IL, Rex Taylor,
Dorian Trauger and Mary Moriarity. Pat Archer presented Mike with our
banner.

This is the second publication for prospective members Sue Miller and Bill
Morse. They will be installed in two weeks.

Since Sergeant at Arms Candace Etzler surprised us today with a "pin check,"
she increased our take to $70.00.

If you have not paid your dues, they are due!!!

Our speaker for today was Kurt Godfrey, speaking on the Miracle League.
Kurt had with him a video of the birth of Miracle League, but for some reason,
it was unable to play on the computer's program. I went by his business
afterward, to view the video. (Time well spent.)

The Miracle League was started in Conyers, Georgia, in the year 2000, by the
parents of a handicapped child. The video showed many of these kids,
exuberant over being able to go to the ball field and hit a ball. One of the
little girls interviewed, said she thinks about it all week long; "just being able
to go to the ball park and hit a ball." It is played on artificial turf,
allowing for easier access for wheelchairs, etc. No score is kept; just making
happy children; making new friends; building self esteem. There are 5.2
million kids with disabilities; let us help make their dreams come true.

There will be a press conference at Miller Field in Delray Beach, on July
15, l:00 p.m., to promote the building of a Miracle League Field in Delray
Beach. Commissioner Pat Archer and Kurt Godfrey are on the board, to promote
this "miracle" for the handicapped children in Palm Beach County. (It will be
the only one of this kind in our county.) The cost of this synthetic turf
will be a cost of around $750,000. Kurt praised Commissioner Archer for
"picking up the ball, and running with it." She went to the Department of Parks and
Recreation, and secured space and maintenance; the Police Department and
Bucky Dent. Thus far, $20,000 has been procured. This project is near and dear
to Kurt's heart. He first became involved after viewing a segment about
Miracle League, watching HBO. (He will try again to show the video to our club,
at a later date; it will warm your heart.) Another bit of information, thus
far, every field has been under the auspices of a Rotary Club.

Next week: Our guest speaker will be our member, Dave Richards. His topic,
"India, Rotary and You." Dave is one of those people who is constantly
"working behind the scenes," for mankind. He spent around three weeks in India,
recently; we are in for a surprise with his involvement, helping others.

Congratulations to Ernie Simon; he won the "Green Hat" with around $600.00
greenbacks!
