ROTARY RAMBLINGS

ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

July 10, 2005

President-elect Dave Armstrong did a tremendous job of "getting his feet
wet," presiding over his first Rotary Club meeting today. Only one strange bit,
he forgot to close the meeting. (Just kidding!) He had a previous
commitment, therefore, Past President Bill Adams closed the meeting.

Jim Pignato gave our invocation. Bruce Williams will be away for a couple
of weeks, so we are on our own; no music! (Who gave him permission to leave?)

We had Ed and Sharon Gorman visiting with us, from New Jersey. Mr. Gorman
has 27 years of perfect Rotary attendance. Bill Adams presented our club
banner to him. I hope they decide to be here permanently, as they are building
here.

We sang Happy Birthday to Dave Richards, who donated $53.00 to the Rel
Moorcroft "Challenge" Scholarship Fund. Also, Lyn Huckle donated $100.00 to this
fund today. As most of you know, an anonymous member has challenged the club
to donate a matched fund of $1,000.00 for this scholarship. At this rate,
we will meet our goal soon! We thank all of you who are so generous.

"Grandma,"a proud one at that, Lyn Huckle had her handsome grandsons,
Christopher and Michael with her at our meeting today.

Georgina Kerr-Jarrett, in her positive pitch, gave an encouraging stock
market report, with all three up at noon.

Sergeant at Arms Tony Allerton was a mighty happy person, reaching a goal of
$227.00, on a hot summer's day in July.

Our guest speaker today was our own member, Dave Richards. Dave owns
insurance companies in our area. His passion is helping others. Dave has been in
our Rotary Club for about two years now. I first got acquainted with him and
his wife Linda, when our club was serving dinner to a city presented dinner,
bringing various neighborhoods together for brainstorming and sharing.
(This is a project of Lula Butler's.) That night, Dave and Linda really worked!
Since then, he quietly does other things that might go unnoticed to many.
He parks cars during the Delray Affair, bringing the proceeds to Rotary Club
of Delray Beach.

This summer, Dave, Linda, and their friend Carolyn Jones, RN, had the
pleasure of going with a medical group to India. It took 35 hours before arriving
at their destination. He had planned to rest for a bit, but saw a sign
stating there was a Rotary meeting in a few hours. Guess what, he was there, and
treated as an honored guest. Rotary is so important to the people of
Pondicherry, India. They know first hand, that Rotary International is there for
them.

Linda and Carolyn worked in a wound care facility, while there. Dave talked
with, passed out gifts, especially toys to the children; photographed the
people of the area, which he shared with us. There is so much illness and
malnutrition among them. They visited the mass grave of 5,000 to 8,000 people
who died during the last Tsunami. These people had nothing before, they have
even less now.

While there, Dave paid $30.00 each to have carts built, which put ten
families in business. If these people have carts, they bring there wares and
trades to the streets. They make a living from this. When the fishing boats
come in, the people carry their little buckets down to the shore; they are
given enough fish for their family to have a meal.

Dave has presented a challenge to our club, to match funds to install
bathrooms in an orphanage, instead of them having to use the outdoors. Also, he
has challenged us to help buy carts to help the people make a living.

We thank Linda and Carolyn for their input to this very moving program. They
were not allowed to travel as missionaries, but as health specialists. They
plan to go again next year!!!!!!!
