ROTARY RAMBLINGS

ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

July 26, 2005

President Leo Phillips has returned from vacation, and presided over another
fantastic meeting.

Lyn Huckle gave a lovely invocation, reminding us of what we should be
thankful for. Without our favorite piano man, Bruce Williams, we struggled
through one song, led by Jimmy Weatherspoon.

Roy and Beth Simon are celebrating their anniversary. When asked how many
years, he replied: "all my life." We wish you both the very best.

Georgina Kerr-Jarrett gave the stock report, with her usual "eternal
optimism."

Sergeant at Arms Ernie Simon gathered in $89.00 today. Lyn Huckle gave
$20.00 of this toward the "Rel Moorcroft Challenge Fund."

Inga Talmon paid for a banner that we had no visiting Rotarian to give it
to. Keep trying, Inga.

Congratulations go out to our newest member, Bill Morse. He is a partner in
the accounting firm of Ray Ripley. Ray, even though you are away, we still
inducted Bill; thanks for bringing in another great member.

Nancy Owens, part of the committee to choose the Service Above Self
recipient for this year, made an announcement, asking for the club to nominate a
candidate for this honor. They had forms on each table for us to choose our
favorite candidate. Please respond to this, soon. There are so many deserving
people in Delray Beach that would qualify.

On August 24, there will be a reception at the Boca Resort, welcoming our
new RI President. The cost will be $65.00, with reception starting at 6:00
p.m., dinner at 7:00 p.m. I will remind you of this again next week.

Reminder: Our Centennial Celebration event is being held on NOVEMBER 5.
Please put this on your calendar. We are hoping to raise $20,000.00 for the
Beacon Center, for scholarships.

I was pleased to introduce my special guest at the meeting. She is Jan
Tennyson, founder of Dare to Dream Children's Foundation, headquartered in
Dallas, TX. This is an amazing woman, who has a real life story to tell. I hope
we can get her as a speaker upon her return to this area.

We were blessed to have as our speaker today, Harvey Brown, Jr. He is one
of the most dynamic speakers we have ever heard. He has such a passion for
aviation, and the space program; he is a delight to listen to. The timing was
perfect! His speech coordinated with our latest launch, the Discovery
Mission. He gave us bits of information on Commander Eileen Collins, and her
Pilot, Jim Kelley.

He gave us stories of some of the other "old time space cowboys." He also
emphasized how important space flight is to our country, and the whole world.
It's truly amazing what has been accomplished, due to our space program.

He also reminisced about his father, Harvey Brown, Sr. and his commitment
to flying, as an ace pilot, and a member of the 67th Squadron, flying 63
missions. He had his father's cap with the 63 stars, signifying the 63 missions.
He closed with asking us to be optimistic at all times. Again, Harvey, you
are a delight to listen to; do it again, soon!!!!!!!!

ANNOUNCEMENT: We have been informed that our lunch at Ellie's will be a
flat price of $12.00. There will be no discount price of "soup and salad only."
The restaurant has been loosing money; we must abide. This will start on
August 9; be prepared.

ANNOUNCEMENT: I have been informed by the president of the Sunrise Rotary
Club of Delray Beach that they will not be meeting on this Friday morning.
Instead, they will have an outing at the bowling alley this evening. Please
choose another venue for make ups, or attend their bowling outing. Make up
cards will be available.

Next week: Our guest speakers will be Steve Bates, along with the coach of
the Little League Team, that our club sponsors. We hope to also see the film
that Kurt Godfrey has on the Miracle League.
