ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
August 2, 2005
President Leo Phillips presided over our meeting; Rev. Roger Richardson gave
our invocation; Jimmy Weatherspoon led us in our favorite old song. (We
sure hope Bruce Williams returns next week; we miss his music.)
We had three members celebrating their wedding anniversaries: John and
Carole Callahan (he donated $36.00); Mickey and Sharon Manning (he donated
$28.00); and Janus and Janina Styperek (he donated $20.00). We wish all of you the
very best, and thank you for your generous donations.
Gerry Meeks welcomed our visiting Rotarians. Among them were Dorian
Trauger, Jeff Dennis, Marianne Blackwell, Richard and Myra Baensch, of Winter Park,
FL. Roger Richardson presented Mr. Baensch with our banner. We welcome each
of you, and hope you will visit us again soon. Lyn Huckle's guest was Rain
Blum.
Fred Bonardi had the pleasure of giving us a positive stock market report.
Sergeant at Arms Tony Allerton gathered in a total of $178.00 today. $10.00
of this was contributed by Harvey Brown, Jr., for the Rel Moorcroft
"Challenge Fund." (A note to our anonymous challenger: we are going to meet your
challenge; watch out!)
President Phillips announced the event of August 24, Boca Resort, 6:00 p.m.
This will be a reception and dinner, to welcome our new RI President,
Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammer. Reservations for this event must be made this week.
REMINDER: All lunches will be $12.00, beginning next week; August 9,
whether you eat a full meal, or just soup and salad. This is due to increased
costs of diner.
Dave Armstrong introduced our "three part program" for today. Our newest
members gave us a bit of personal information about themselves. Then we ended
it with (finally) the video of the Miracle League.
Mimi Hutchison is originally from Rochester New York. Her husbanded joined
the foreign service, taking them to Taiwan, Burma, Hong Kong and many other
interesting places to live. While in Hong Kong, Ms. Hutchison studied
interior design with a U. S. firm; from there, she moved to England, then to
Florida. She has owned her own interior design business for twenty years.
Recently, she decided to take her business "home." She now works her business in the
comfort of her home. Mimi, you have certainly had an interesting life, up
to now; keep it up; and welcome to Rotary Club of Delray Beach.
Bill Morse, our other new member is now a partner with Ray Ripley (our
member), in his accounting firm. Bill is from Suffering, New York, and Portland,
Maine. He has been in accounting twenty-five years. He has been married
thirty-eight years, with two children, and grandchildren. He has been in
Florida five years. He is happy to be working with Ray, and closer to home. He
previously was a detective in New York, graduating from the New York Police
Academy. Bill, we welcome you.
Kurt Godfrey, with help from Bill Adams, by a miracle, was able to show us
the video of the Miracle League children. (As you know, when he spoke a
couple of weeks ago, the video would not play.)
Kurt spoke briefly, telling us a bit about our progress, getting a Miracle
League field in Delray Beach. From time to time, he will keep us informed.
Our guest Rotarian, Assistant District Governor Richard Basensch, (of Winter
Park) was able to tell us about his district's efforts and achievement of
building a Miracle League Field in the Orlando area. It was quite an endeavor,
but they prevailed. He said they hope to build more in the near future.
Hopefully, next week, our speakers will be our Little League Coach, and
Steve Bates. Our sponsored team is doing so well in the league, they were unable
to attend today. Also, next week, we will be inducting another new member,
Susan Miller, Executive Director at Crossroads.
