ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
August 30, 2005
I missed you for a couple of weeks, while on vacation. Almost missed you
again; contrary computer here! (I had to make a trip to the mountains of
beautiful Tennessee, to rejuvenate my suth'n accent, y'all!)
Today, President Leo Phillips presided over our meeting. Joyce Lunsford
gave the invocation. Steve Rich lead the singing, since Jimmy Weatherspoon
could not find his "Rotary eyeglasses." Do you think we should put a pair of
glasses on that list, along with a new PA system?
Leo and Pat Phillips are celebrating their anniversary; he donated $22.00
toward our goal for the Rel Moorcroft Challenge Fund. Leo and Pat, we wish you
many happy years together.
Bill Adams (just cannot get away from that podium) filled in for Bruce
Wenzel, by welcoming our guests. His attire cannot compete with Bruce's pink
blazer, however. Among the guests was our Assistant District Governor, Betsy
Owen, and husband Michael.
A make up was done by Sylvia Pecaro. There were three AWOL's.
Fred Bonardi did not have a good stock report, but he did have a good report
on our "Rel Challenge Fund." Lyn Huckle donated $100.00 toward the fund,
collecting $200.00 today. I think we have met our challenge, but will wait for
official announcement.
President Phillips noted what a great evening was had by members and their
guests at the 6930 District Dinner at the Boca Hotel, honoring our RI
President Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar. The consensus was that we are certainly in good
hands. Our own Bob Erickson was the official photographer for this event.
Dates to Remember:
October 1, Golf Tournament, Breakers, West. Some of our sponsorships for
this event are Weekes & Calloway and Bill Morse, one of our newest members.
(Others posted later.)
November 5, Centennial Benefit for Beacon Center. Merrill-Lynch, thanks to
Georginna Kerr-Jarrett, has pledged sponsorship of $2,500.00; Fred Bonardi,
$500.00; Con Fecher, Lyn Huckle and Leo Phillips are also contributing
sponsors. (Other sponsors will be mentioned next week.)
October 14-16, District Conference, Marriott, PGA. On October 15, the group
will be going to Belle Glade for a work day, to aid the Boys and Girls Clubs
of Belle Glade.
October 30, Annual Rotary Picnic, 10-2:00 p.m. (More info next week.)
Bob Erickson has designed a website for our club. I would encourage you to
go to DelrayRI.com and join. He states you can post any announcements to
our club, personally. Take a look: DelrayRI.com.
Our guest speaker for today was our Assistant District Governor, Past
President of Rotary Sunrise, Betsy Owen. Her assistant was her husband, Mike. He
operated the slideshow, and offered comments. They have just returned from a
most memorable trip into the midst of the disaster, left by the Tsunami.
They worked with Habitat for Humanity, sponsored by National Association of
Realtors. They actually worked onsite to help rebuild an almost totally
destroyed country. They were among the first group from the U. S. to go to build.
The statistics of loss of lives is truly astounding. There are many orphans;
yet no government help can be given to those, whose parents are still
missing.
The 500 square foot homes that are being built; being poured, one bucket at
a time, cost approximately $1,955.00 in U. S. Dollars. These are a luxury to
those who have been living in tarp covered huts. Their fishing boats were
also destroyed, leaving them without a way to make a living.
The Thai are very proud people, they do not accept charity, therefore,
things must be handled properly, according to their customs. Even the children
are helping to rebuild their land. Betsy and Mike helped; laying one block at
a time.
Speaking with Betsy, she stated this has certainly been a life altering
experience for her and Mike; their lives will never be the same. If your club,
or organization would like them for a program, to have them share their
experience with you, please contact Betsy Owen at: _betsyowen@aol.com_
(mailto:betsyowen@aol.com) .
I will share next week's speaker ASAP.
