ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
September 6, 2005
Our meeting was presided over by President Leo Phillips. He opened the
meeting with the following prayer:
"Lord, we ask that you be with all the victims of the ongoing tragedy in
Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Please let the waters recede, so that
your children may be spared more pain and suffering. We ask that you watch
over all families and friends of loved ones lost or who are sick and infirm or
missing. Please pour thy healing grace on all who are in pain; and please
hold in your loving hands the lives and spirits of dedicated and selfless
rescue workers and volunteers. We ask this in thy name. Amen."
This is the prayer of the people of the world. Rotary Clubs all over the
country, and the world, are eager to do their part to help out. Our club will,
of course, be involved as well. Our Board of Directors will meet at 7:30 a.
m. this coming Tuesday morning in the Marilyn Room of Ellie's Diner, to make
more decisions on this. The club will be kept informed as to what is the
best procedure.
Art NeJame welcomed our visitors today, with one prospective member
attending. Steve Rich led the group in singing.
Sergeant at Arms Roy Simon collected a total of $228.00 today, with $201.00
of it designated to the Katrina Hurrricane Relief Fund. There were some big
contributors; will mention them next week.
WE MET OUR REL MOORCROFT SCHOLARSHIP CHALLENGE! Our Executive Secretary
Sally Dye confirmed that we met our goal of matching $1,000.00 funds for the
scholarship fund. Now, maybe the challenger will come forth and reveal him (or
her) self to us.
President Phillips gave us an updated report from Arthur Reef. His wife is
better and now at home. We are looking forward to having Arthur back soon,
and wish her good health.
We received a letter of thanks from John Callahan, Director of Delray Beach
Library (also an outstanding member of our Rotary Club). Our club presented
him a check for $3,000.00, on behalf of the club, with $2,000.00 more payable
over the next two years. This money will designate a Reading Room in the new
library, bearing our name, Rotary Club of Delray Beach, on the door. This
is such a vital commitment to the children of Delray Beach today, and
tomorrow, and on and on.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Upcoming event: October 1, Golf Tournament, Breakers West. Proceeds to
benefit Palm Beach County Scholastic Scholarship Fund.
November 5: Our Centennial Benefit; benefiting The Beacon Center Scholarship
Fund. Event to be at the home of Anne and Reeve Bright. (Invitations will
be forthcoming in the mail.)
Bob Erickson was our speaker today. He is a computer teacher, as well as a
photography teacher. He is encouraging each member to join the Delray Beach
Rotary Club Internet Group.
His instructions are: "Send an empty email to..
_delrayri-subscribe@yahoogroups.com_ (mailto:delrayri-subscribe@yahoogroups.com) . Do not include any
message. Your email will not be read by anyone. This is an automatic system
that will confirm that your email address is correct. You will be sent an
email with directions on how to complete the membership process.
If you go into this site, you will find a lovely picture of our president,
his wife, and our RI president. Of course, our club motto is: "Where the
rubber meets the road!" If you have a problem, please consult Bob Erickson next
week! He may need to teach a computer literate class to his fellow
Rotarians, huh?
Next week our guest speaker will be Clifford Jones, former chairperson of
the Boca Pops. He will be speaking on The U. S. Doing Business in/with China.
This should be an enlightening experience for us.
