ROTARY RAMBLINGS

ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

September 13, 2005

At 7:30 a.m. our Rotary Club of Delray Beach held their monthly meeting in
Ellie's Marilyn Room, with President Leo Phillips presiding. There were
fifteen members in attendance. The upcoming fundraiser events were discussed, as
well as other community projects, we are participating in. We will be
working alongside the Sunrise Rotary Club of Delray, giving out dictionaries to
third graders in the Delray Beach area. I am pleased to announce that Nancy
Owens (retired school principal) will be spearheading our clubs' efforts.

I am pleased to announce that Mark Denkler will be going to Biloxi and
Gulfport, Mississippi this next week, on behalf of our Rotary Club, to fit and
hand out shoes, socks, belts, etc., donated primarily by Florsheim Shoes. They
are pleased to have our club as their sponsor. Mark will be working
alongside many other shoe store owners, and volunteers to accomplish this project,
for the hurricane devastated areas of that region. Dave Richards, another one
of our members, is looking to take another project of help to that area. I
will inform you, as I hear more from him on his efforts. We have so many
humanitarian members of our Rotary Club of Delray Beach; it makes me proud.

At noon, President Leo Phillips led another fine Rotary meeting. Candace
Etzler gave a lovely invocation; Jimmy Weatherspoon did not want to press his
luck with the singing, since Bruce Williams was away (we miss you, Bruce), so
he kept it short and sweet (thank goodness).

Candace Etzler and Roger Richardson are celebrating birthdays this week.
She donated $5.00. Roger gave nothing for his birthday, but in honor of
Candace's birthday, he donated $50.00!

Art NeJame welcomed our only visitor, Nick Leob. Mr. Leob is being
published for membership; this is the first publication. By the way, he donated
$100.00 to our club today, for the Hurricane Relief Fund; we thank you.

Georgina Kerr-Jarrett gave the stock report. Although the market was down,
she stated: "it's not bad for the year, however."

Sergeant at Arms, Roy Simon collected a total of $243.00 today. Mark
Denkler paid for a banner he was unable to give away.

It sure was great to see Jon Simon back with us today. Jon has not been
well; we wish him good health. We hear that Arthur Reef's wife is continuing to
recuperate. For those of you that are away due to illness, we wish you and
yours well.

Inga Talman was kind enough to bring in a newspaper article, fresh from
Chicago, featuring the home of Rotary Founder, Paul Harris. This was very
interesting reading. President Phillips shared this with the club.

Pat Owens will be updating our club "blue book." This is our club roster,
with members pictures and personal information. Art NeJame will be making the
pictures. If you have not had yours made, or wish an updated picture, or
information, please speak to Pat, or Art to make arrangements to do so.

The golf tournament fundraiser: October 1; still looking for more
sponsorships and foursomes.

The Centennial fundraiser: November 5; need more sponsors. Leo Phillips
just donated $500.00. Who wants to match this? Invitations for this event will
be sent out in the mail by the end of this month.

Service Above Self Award, scheduled for November 29, Old School Square.

Dave Armstrong presented our speaker for the day, Mr. Clifford "Cliff"
Jones. Mr. Jones spoke on What's Going on in China?

Mr. Jones is the Managing Partner of Sterling Strategic Development and
Sterling Global Trading, LLC. He also serves as the U.S. partner for Keystone
Leadership (Shanghai) and the Mobley Group Pacific (Shanghai). He travels
regularly between China and the U. S.

Mr. Jones is the past chairman of the Centre for the Arts at Mizner Park,
past chairman of the Boca Pops and past chairman of the Boca Raton Chamber of
Commerce's International Committee. Mr. Jones is a recipient of the 2001
leading Men of Palm Beach County Award.

In 1984, Mr. Jones went to China as a consultant to work with the Ministry
of Culture, timing was bad, so his contact was unavailable. He visited the
China Central TV, while there. He was able to get advertisers for them, as
well as some American programming.

Mr. Jones helped negotiate Xerox's joint venture partnership with the
Chinese in Shanghai, one of the first large ventures between them and the U. S.

Mr. Jones described the difference in 1984, and his most recent visit with
his wife to China. Where there were rice fields, large cities loom on the
horizon. The hum of the subways, and cars on the streets are increasing at an
alarming rate.

He advised us, as Americans, to re-evaluate ourselves. (By the way, he
stated that Rotary is his favorite organization.)

Next week: Our speaker will be Dr. Bill Bean. He will tell us about his
Rotary Club of Jupiter-Tequesta's project of "Computers for Kids." He will
tell us how they collect, and have them refurbished for the students of that
area.
