The meeting was preceded over by Vice President, David Armstrong. It was gr=
eat to have the beautiful melodies of Bruce Williams. Jimmy Weatherspoon ga=
ve the invocation and lead us in lively renditions of Home on the Range and=20=
Smile. The turnout was very small due to the inclement weather. There were=
no birthdays or anniversaries, and as Bruce Wentzel indicated the weather n=
ot only kept members away, but guests and visitors too. Bruce requested we=20=
acknowledge one of our own, who utilizing his own pickup truck spent the pas=
t week up in Mississippi helping the hurricane victims. Truly an example of=
service above self from our own Steve Bates. =20
Stock report was given by Georgina. Market was up 30 points on the Dow. S&=
P was up slightly overall. Big news was that Greenspan is to speak later to=
day. Feeling is that rates will go up again.
Ernie Simons as Sergeant-at-Arms indicated that although the total today wou=
ld have been only $67 due to the poor attendance, because he had the check f=
or the matching Rel Moorcroft funds from the anonymous donor in the amount o=
f $1,000 - the total for today is $1,067. Ernie informed the group that des=
pite the donor's protests (because he wanted it to be about the Rel Moorcrof=
t - not him), he was going to announce his name in any case. The anonymous=20=
donor is Art Najame.
Announcements:
October 1 - Golf Tournament needs support. Apparently, many of our golfers=20=
are unavailable that date. If you know anyone who might want to play contac=
t Dave Armstrong immediately.
Centennial Project - Pat Archer has been working very had on this project, b=
ut was not present to report. Per Kurt Godfrey, invitations should be going=
out at the end of the month.
Dictionary Project - Nancy Owens was not present to report on this project.
District Meeting - October 14-16 at PAGE Marriott. Dave Armstrong indicated=
the one he attended was quite informative and energizing. In addition, Sat=
urday, Oct. 15, we are heading to Belle Glade to work at the Boys and Girls=20=
Club. Please let Dave know if you can participate. More information will b=
e forthcoming.
Dr. William Bean from Jupiter Rotary spoke to us regarding the Computers for=
Kids Program. Dr. Bean has spoken to us before on other topics. However,=20=
this program entails collecting computers and any other computer components=20=
(monitors, printers, keyboard, mice) and giving them to a school representat=
ive who is willing to repair them using parts from one for the others. Thes=
e computers when completed are given to needy kids in that particular school=
(currently a middle school in Riviera Beach where Dr. Bean's grandson atten=
ds) as rewards for scholastic improvement and progress. This way these kids=
have a computer at home. The only expense is gas to pickup parts and deliv=
er them to the school. Currently they need power cords and mice, but will t=
ake any components to make up 1 computer unit (computer, monitor, keyboard,=20=
mouse, printer). Any club can do their own Program by finding a school that=
has someone who would be willing to repair and distribute the computers. =20=
Look for schools where there might be the greatest need (kids who would not=20=
have computers at home). In addition, our own Bob Eriksson indicated he had=
thought of this Program for a group he has of elderly, who have never used=20=
a computer and would also needs some basic classes. Bob has volunteered to=20=
repair all the computers collected. In addition, Dr. Bean mentioned that in=20=
his travels speaking to other clubs about his Program, Palm Beach Flagler Ro=
tary is collecting used cell phones to be donated to battered women - so if=20=
any of you have those, get in touch with them. You never know what we can s=
hare with each other to help make our individual programs successful.
Our next week's speaker was not announced.
