ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
September 27, 2005
I want to thank Susan Miller again for writing the Ramblings last week, in
my absence.
Today, our meeting was led by President-elect David Armstrong, since
President Leo Phillips is away. This gives Dave good practice for next year, right?
Steve Bates gave a lovely invocation. Jimmy Weatherspoon led the singing,
accompanied by the wonderful music of Bruce Williams.
Tony Allerton is celebrating his birthday, with a generous donation of
$50.00 for his birthday, and $50.00 for the Hurricane Relief Fund. Tony, we thank
you for your generosity, and wish you a happy birthday.
Dave O'Connell again introduced Nick Loeb, a prospective member, as a guest.
Lou Cucci did two make ups online.
Georgina Kerr-Jarrett gave the stock report, but still with her eternal
optimism, even though the market was down; even the consumer confidence report
was down.
Sergeant at Arms Candace Etzler gathered in a total of $200.00. The banner
was paid for by Bill Morse. We had a few too many AWOL's. (You know who you
are!)
Jimmy Weatherspoon passed out a flyer to each of us, regarding an upcoming
health seminar, called "Your Life, Your Health." For more information on
this, call 561-833-1461, ext. 39.
Pat Owens is working diligently to update our "Blue Book," with current
information on each member. If you have not had your picture taken (or wish to
have it taken again), please see Art NeJame (photographer), or Pat, to get
this scheduled. Kurt Godfrey will be doing the printing of this updated book
soon! This is the best way to know our members, and how to contact them.
ANNOUNCEMENT: Our upcoming District 6930 Conference, Everglades Safari, will
be held October 14-16, 2005, at Palm Beach Gardens Marriott, 4000 RCA
Boulevard, Palm Beach Gardens, FL. Our District Governor Ken Hirsch, is really
enthused about this conference, stating: "It's not just another year, its
another century of service for Rotarians. What better way to celebrate "Service
Above Self" than to experience it first hand." On Saturday, each club
attending, will have a work day in the Glades, exhibiting our true Rotary spirit.
For those of you that cannot attend all three days, please see
President-elect Dave Armstrong for further information.
By now, you should have received your invitation, by mail, for Open House -
Open Doors Scholarship Dinner, in honor of the Rotary International
Centennial Celebration. The event is scheduled for Saturday, November 5, 2005, at the
home of Anne (our own Rotarian) and Reeve Bright. They are also looking
for raffle prizes for this occasion. If you have a raffle gift, please notify
Pat Archer, immediately. They are also looking for sponsorships on various
levels. Help us be a part of this commitment to Community Child Care Center's
Beacon Center, with scholarships.
Remember, this Saturday is the golf tournament; proceeds also going to
establish scholarship money for the Scholastic Scholarship Fund (Founder, Cliff
Ripley).
Today, we had as our speaker, Steve Bates, a true "Service Above Self"
Rotarian. Steve and a crew from South Florida, trucked to the hurricane torn Gulf
area, with their tools and supplies. They met up with other volunteers from
all over the U. S. They were working with a group called Eagles Wings. They
spent days, clearing, repairing, and consoling the people who had lost so
much. He presented (along with help from Fire Marshall Bill) a slideshow of
what he had encountered on his trip. He and his crew did most of their work in
Bay St. Louis, east of New Orleans. It is almost impossible to comprehend
the devastation that had occurred. We are so very proud to call Steve a fellow
Rotarian.
We also had another true Rotarian make the trip to Bayou La Batre, near
Biloxi, MS. This was Mark Denkler, distributing 3,000 pairs of Florsheim shoes,
socks, belts, etc to the hurricane ravished areas. He told us his vehicle
bore the Delray Beach Rotary banner on its side. He told us the Southern
Baptist Convention served 16,000 meals daily. We hope to have Mark give us more
details about his journey, when he gets all his pictures together.
The Board of Directors interviewed Nick Loeb, Real Estate Investor today,
for membership.
Next week's program is still a mystery. I will update you as soon as I
receive this information.
