ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
October 4, 2005
President Leo Phillips was back with us today; welcome back. Dave Harden
gave the invocation; Jimmy Weatherspoon led us in a few old favorites. Bruce
Williams, there were many compliments for you, after your departure. (You
raised quite a bit of money today.)
Happy Birthday to Mickey Manning, who donated $20.00 today.
Bruce Wenzel was back with us, welcoming visiting Rotarian Bob Willis and
wife. Mimi Hutchison presented the banner.
Fred Bonardi gave the stock market report. At his report, it was holding
its own, but is down for the year.
Tony Allerton, Sergeant at Arms, collected $150.00 today. Mickey Manning
donated $20.00 for his birthday; Ray Ripley donated $20.00 for his return;
Nancy King donated $13.00, since she was able to "slip away" for lunch today.
Welcome back!
Today, President Phillips inducted another new member; Nick Loeb. Nick is a
real estate investor. We hope to have him tell us more about himself, in
the near future.
President Phillips read a letter from Cliff Ripley, thanking the club for
supporting the recent golf tournament, to raise funds for the Scholastic
Scholarship Fund of Palm Beach County. Cliff has generously donated matching funds
of $1,000.00 for this wonderful foundation which he founded many years ago.
We thank you, Cliff.
REMINDER: Our 6930 District Conference is coming up October 14, 9:00 a. am.
at PGA Marriott. On Saturday, October 15, our club will assist in painting
a church in Pahokee. This will be our participation in the Glades Project.
Dave Armstrong is chairing this project. He is looking for volunteers;
please see him.
REMINDER: Rotary Club of Delray Beach & Community Child Care Center
Celebrate - Open House - Open Doors Scholarship Dinner, Saturday, November 5, 2005,
6:30 p.m. This is in honor of the Rotary International Centennial
Celebration. Your tickets will arrive via mail in the next few days. This will be
held at the home of Reeve and Anne Bright, 700 Seasage Drive, Delray Beach. As
you know, Anne is a member of our club; also, she is very active on the
board at CCCC. This is her passion.
Our speaker today was Mark Denkler, "Mr. Shoe Man." As most of you know,
Mark owns and operates Vince Canning Shoe Store, on Atlantic Avenue. He was
offered a challenge from Florsheim Shoes, to get a sponsor to deliver shoes to
the hurricane ravaged area. Mark came to the board of directors with this,
and our Rotary Club of Delray Beach sponsored his trip. He contacted many
other shoe sources, and came up with 3,000 pairs of shoes to deliver. He
traveled to Biloxi, MS and Bayou LaBate, AL, (ten miles from Mobile) to distribute
them. He arrived nineteen days after the hurricane. The flood waters had
receded, leaving the stark devastation in its wake. With help from Bill Adams,
he showed us his pictures; not a pretty sight! He told us the Southern
Baptist Convention, using First Baptist Church of Biloxi, and other small
churches in the area, had fed 16,000 people daily. This was while awaiting help
from FEMA and Red Cross; they had not worked their way into this area, as yet.
These people were using his discarded cardboard boxes to hold their precious
belongings, which they were trying to salvage.
Mark informed us that one of our own members donated $500.00 anonymously.
Mark, you are a true Rotarian. These are examples of our fine "Service Above
Self" members.
Dave Richards, another one of our members is headed to Gulfport, MS, next
week, to help repair and rebuild homes there. Dave, we want to thank you, and
want to hear all about your trip, upon your return.
Next Week: Speaker will be Linda Culbertson, Clerk of Courts of Palm Beach
County. She will be speaking on "Identify Theft."
