ROTARY RAMBLINGS

ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
October 11, 2005

At 7:30 a.m. this morning, sixteen of your Rotary Club members met at
Ellie's Marilyn Room. This is always an informative meeting; so much
"brainstorming" goes on. Many decisions are made for the good of our club; everyone
should take the time to attend one of these meetings. (They serve breakfast,
also.)

Wonders never cease! Today, we heard all of the noon meeting, without
interruption. After last week's fiasco with the P. A. system, the dining room
manager went to Bob Smella (owner) and pleaded our case; we now have a new P. A.
system! Of course it belongs to the diner, so even the Kiwanis Club will
benefit from it, also!

President Leo Phillips led the meeting; Bill Adams gave a lovely invocation.
Jimmy Weatherspoon led the singing acappella, since our Bruce Williams had a
terrible fall, just before playing for us, at the meeting. He was taken, by
ambulance, to the hospital. I will keep you informed, as I receive
information. Please keep Bruce in your prayers; Bruce we love you.

We sang Happy Birthday to Fred Bonardi, who is celebrating his 45th; he
donated $45.00. Fred, thanks and many happy returns. We had three people
celebrating anniversaries; Bill and Barbara Arnst, 31 years; Dave and Nancy
O'Connell, celebrating 52 years; and our newlyweds, the Roger Richardson's with two
years. Happy Anniversary to all of you! Each one was generous enough to
donate money matching their anniversary +.

We also had a special event today; Harvey Brown, Jr., greeting our guests,
and visiting Rotarians, in the same manner his father had done for so many
years. Harvey, thank you; great job. Among the guests today, was Doug Smith,
Assistant City Manager of Delray Beach, introduced by Dave Harden, City
Manager.

Fred Bonardi, looking very suave on his birthday, gave a positive stock
market report. The DOW was up 14 points; NASDAQ down; S&P even. He also gave
the Sergeant at Arms report. John Arnold gave $10.00, because his son is
visiting. Nick Loeb gave $5.00, because his picture was in the newspaper this
week. Fred collected a total of $217.00 today; good going!

We welcome back Arthur Reef and Sam Altdoerfer; good to see both of you.

This coming weekend, October 14-16, 2005, will be our District 6930
Conference. If you plan to participate in the "Glades Project," meet Dave Armstrong
on Saturday morning, at 8:30 a.m., in the parking lot of Home Depot, on
Woolbright, at I-95. They will carpool to Pahokee, to paint up a church there, as
our club project. The conference is being held at the Palm Beach Gardens
Mariott.

October 30, Rotary District 6930, Areas 1 & 2, will hold their Third Annual
"Family of Rotary Picnic," from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Lake Biwa Park,
Delray Beach. (This park adjoins Morikami Park; was held there last year.)
More details next week; mark your calendar.

November 5, Centennial Fundraiser! You should have received your invitation
in the mail by now. There will be about three hundred people expected to
attend this function. Please be prepared to give your attendance intention by
next week's meeting. This is by far, the largest project our club has
undertaken, in years. The proceeds will go to scholarships for the Community Child
Care Center's Beacon Center.

Our club is also undertaking a project along with Sunrise Delray Rotary, to
distribute dictionaries to all third graders in the Delray Beach area.
Heading up this project in our club is Nancy Owens; thanks Nancy.

Mark November 29, on your calendar, for Service Above Self Award, at Old
School Square. Ernie Simon, chairperson on this committee, will announce our
SAS recipient next week; so, be at our meeting!

DECEMBER 1, our Holiday Party, at Delray Beach Golf Club.

John Callahan introduced our first for this year, Student of the Month,
Cherell Alexander. She was accompanied by her proud mother, Ronda Alexander, and
her chosen Teacher for the Month, Cheryl Lee-Bennett. Ms. Bennett has been
here multiple times as Teacher of the Month.

Cherell is quite a busy young lady, participating in many school, and
community activities, as well as working part time. She hopes to be a future
business leader in our community, after fulfilling her education. Our
congratulations to both of you.

Dave Armstrong introduced our guest speaker today, Ms. Linda M. Culbertson,
Chief Communications Officer, in the office of Sharon R. Bock, Clerk and
Comptroller of Palm Beach County. She spoke on "Identity Theft." She gave us
many tips on how to try to safeguard our private information, such as our
social security number, credit card information, etc. As for this crime, we rank
ninth in the nation. She handed out a booklet, containing pertinent
information, on how to take steps to safeguard our information. She recommends that
we ask for and receive our credit rating from all three major credit
reporting agencies, at least once yearly. John Callahan suggested that you stagger
it, requesting a report every four months, so as to keep current information
available. All information about us, such as real estate, etc., is available
via Internet. She suggested that each of us check out this information.

If you become a victim of this crime, contact your credit card companies,
major reporting agencies, and the FTC, as soon as possible. This is a very
serious, growing crime, as some of us in this club have experienced; take all
precautions to protect your private information.

Next Week: A mystery!
