ROTARY RAMBLINGS

ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

November 1, 2005

We have all been through tough times the last few days. Our hearts go out
to all those who had extensive damage; we hope all of you are safe. If you
know of a fellow Rotarian in need, please let it be known to our club. Be kind
to someone and their needs; perform a selfless deed; that's what Rotary is
all about.

President Leo Phillips led our meeting today. Hack Allen gave the
invocation. Jimmy Weatherspoon cheered us up, by leading us in a couple of old
favorites, a cappella, since our friend Bruce Williams is still recuperating from
his hip surgery. (As soon as I receive an update on Bruce, I will inform the
club.)

Kurt Godfrey welcomed our International visiting Rotarian, Oswald Wertz,
from Germany. Nick Loeb had his lovely fiancee' with him again today. Sergeant
at Arms, Tony Allerton, collected a total of $71.00 today.

It was announced that Lew Currier will be away for two months, due to a
medical situation. I'm sure someone will volunteer to fill his post, in his
absence.

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT: Anne Bright has informed us she is "all powered up," (has
electricity) and is looking forward to entertaining at her home on Saturday
night, November 5, 6:30 p.m. OPEN HOUSE - OPEN DOORS, in honor of the
Rotary Club of Delray Beach Centennial Celebration, benefiting the Community
Child Care Beacon Center, will be held. We have been looking forward to this
event for many months; it is one of our club's largest fundraiser projects, in
many years. We hope you will make this a priority, helping to make a better
education for those less fortunate.

As is very fitting, in light of the traumatic events of the last few days,
from Hurricane Wilma, we had the opportunity to hear Fire Marshall Bill Adams,
and City Manager David Harden tell our club of the chain of events, and how
marvelously our leaders handled the situations. Bill told of the progress,
following the hurricane. All departments, consisting of three shifts, did
twelve hour shifts. All departments, with 100% staffing, were at the command
post. They were away from their own families. After the winds gained a
certain speed, they logged and prioritized all calls. They also conferred on
water, schools, curfew, etc. Bill laughingly admitted that even Dave Harden
became "righteously indignant," to keep the "ball rolling."

Bill stated there were lessons learned by this traumatic event. Some of
them are oxygen, "Cascade System;" more  refrigerators, designated to medicines;
nebulizers with rechargers; food for high risk people, and the great
importance of live dispatchers.

Mr. Harden was available for questions and answers. One of the most
important statements was: "Delray water is clean." We are no longer under the "boil
water" restriction.  We  wish to thank Dave Harden, City Manager; Bill Adams;
Lula Butler; Pat Archer (all members of our club), and all the other
dedicated city personnel for their efforts, in our crisis (as well as all year
long).

We also had tips for heating water when the power is off, from Nancy Owens.
She filled liter bottles with water and set them in her car; in a few hours,
it was hot enough to "bathe in." (Necessity, the Mother of Invention.)

At this time, I want to pay tribute to a very special member of our Rotary
Club, Mr. John Arnold. John joined Rotary in Brainerd, MN in 1983; he joined
our club in 2001. He is a native of Minnesota, having worked in Hotel
Management. He is faithful to attend meetings, and all club related events. He is
especially proud of his four sons and twelve grandchildren. We always know
when one of them is visiting him; he generously donates money to our club in
honor of their visits. He recently spent the whole weekend at our 6930
District Conference. His statement to the club was how he enjoyed it, and how in
that one weekend, he learned more about Rotary than ever before in all his
years as a Rotarian. Our hats are off to such a dedicated Rotarian, and to his
wife Lovelle, his "designated driver."

Be safe; we are healing.
