ROTARY RAMBLINGS

ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

November 15, 2005

He's back! Bruce Williams showed up, sporting his fancy cane! This was his
first driving experience, since his unfortunate accident here, recently.
His piano playing is as great as ever. Bruce, we are so happy to have you back
with us.

President Leo Phillips presided over another very informative meeting. Sam
Altdoerffer was our song leader; wow, did we sound good!

Mark Denkler welcomed five visiting Rotarians; two of them International.
Ted Lutpin, of NY, presented and received a banner. We want to welcome back
one of our snowbirds, John Ahern.

Our newest stock reporter, Georgina Rice, gave the stock report. (Somehow,
this face looks familiar, however. Georgina, this name is so much easier to
remember.) At the time of her report, the market was up.

Sergeant at Arms, Tony Allerton, collected a total of $93.00; a far cry from
last week's total, but yet great. Mark Denkler informed me that our record
meeting total was in June of 1993; a total of $600.00. I'm sure he remembers
this so vividly, since he was president that year. Thanks, Mark, for the
"heads up."

John Callahan had the pleasure of introducing our Student of the Month,
Brittany Rolle, of Atlantic High School. She plans on attending the College of
Education at FAU. She hopes to return as part of the teaching staff at
Atlantic High School, and also at FAU. Brittany wants to give back to those who
have helped her along the way. Her hobbies are work and dance. She has
received many awards in dance, and also academically. Her proud mother, Kimberly
Dobard was in attendance. Her teacher of choice for Teacher of the Month was
Barbara Bean. Ms. Bean has visited us many times, in this capacity; she is a
real favorite among the students. Congratulations to both of you.

sign up sheet for this also.

Dave Armstrong had the pleasure of introducing our guest speaker, Jim Kidd,
President of South Tech Charter High School. He went into coaching, but
realized he loved his carpentry work best of all. He is a journeyman carpenter
and cabinetmaker by trade. He hails from Tennessee (I understood his dialect
perfectly).

He took a school that was going to be closed by the school board, and with
the help of a board of directors, created an educational institution that has
become so successful, his title has been changed from principal to president.

Mr. Kidd says this is five schools in one. They include a comprehensive day
high school that prepares students for college, and a school that offers
eleven career academics, in which job skills are taught in fields ranging from
air conditioning and cosmetology to commercial graphic arts and computer
technology. There also is an Innovative Options School, which offers an
alternative education program after the regular school day ends, plus a community
school that offers continuing education programs for adults. Finally, there is
the Continuing Workforce Development Center, which offers Occupational Safety
and Health Administration safety training classes and refresher courses for
people needing to be re-certified in a field.

Their budget is eleven million yearly. They are a full service school,
without full facilities. 70 to 80% of these students go to college. Last year
the percentage was 78. This is a remarkable incentive.

Mr. Kidd's education includes Bachelor of Education, Austin Peay State
University; Master's, Vocational Education Administration, University of South
Florida. He also studied educational leadership at FAU.

His career highlight: "The successful conversion of South Tech to a charter
school to preserve it for the community and continue a legacy of community
service."

Mr. Kidd has invited us to come and see what wonderful programs are going
on at South Tech Charter School. Their motto: "Creating success
stories...one student at a time!"

Information on next week's speaker TBD.
