DELRAY BEACH ROTARY RAISES OVER $40,000 FOR
COMMUNITY CHILD CARE BEACON CENTER SERVICES
DELRAY BEACH, FLORIDA (December 9, 2005) - The Rotary Club of Delray Beach's
Centennial Project, Open House-Open Doors, was an overwhelming success with
over $40,000 raised for the Community Child Care Beacon Center Services.
The Rotary Club of Delray Beach partnered with the Community Child Care
Center to host this event in commemoration of the Rotary International Centennial
Celebration. Delray Beach City Commissioner Pat Archer and Community Child
Care Center Board Member Ann Bennett co-chaired the event which was held at
the elegant home of Mr. and Mrs. Reeve Bright. Guests enjoyed a delightful
evening of gourmet dining, entertainment and a tour of the Bright's beautiful
historic home located on the Intracoastal Waterway in Delray Beach.
Proceeds from the fundraiser came from sponsorships, ticket sales, raffles,
and a generous check from Palm Beach County Commissioner Mary McCarthy, on
behalf of Palm Beach County, for $20,000.
"Rotary not only raised thousands of dollars for the neediest children in
our community but they did it despite Hurricane Wilma tearing up our town just
two weeks earlier," says Nancy Hurd, Executive Director of the Community
Child Care Center. "Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the fellowship while generously
supporting our cause."
All proceeds from the event will be used to create scholarships for the
Beacon Center Services at the Village Academy.
"It's a little known fact that Rotary is the largest private provider of
scholarships in the world," says Rotary Club of Delray Beach President Leo H.
Phillips, Jr. "We are thrilled that the money raised through our Centennial
Project will further the mission of Rotary to provide educational opportunities
for the children in our community."
The Beacon Center is a body of services that formed from a pilot program in
New York City. These programs are located in public schools that serve
children, families and neighborhoods that are considered high-risk for crime,
poverty and high dropout rates, and are targeted for special services. The
Beacon Center acts as a community center using the Delray Beach Village Academy's
building and working closely with its principal and staff. The Beacon
Services encompass programs for four major groups: extended-day (after school)
program, teen program, adult education and community services. The Community
Child Care Center at the main campus and the Beacon Center Services at Village
Academy serve over 700 children from ages 12 months to 18 years old.
Serving on the Open House~Open Doors Committee were David Armstrong, Anne
Bright, Shirley Clark, Missie Corey, Robin deBaptiste, Kurt Godfrey, Sandy
Henninger, Lyn Huckle, Catherine Jacobus, Georgina Kerr-Jarrett, Nancy King,
