ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
January 3, 2006
Here we are in a new year; let us pray this year of 2006 will bring us
peace, and less disasters. Within our own club, there were changes; a few deaths,
and on a lighter note, there were three marriages. We also raised
$43,000.00 for the Community Child Care Center/ Beacon Center, for scholarships. This
was our Centennial Project. This is in addition to the scholarships we give
to Atlantic High School each year, and to the Scholastic Scholarship Fund of
Palm Beach (Cliff Ripley's Foundation). Let us, as fellow Rotarians, pledge
to make a difference in this world, this year.
Our meeting was led by President Leo Phillips. Hack Allen gave the
invocation. Jimmy Weatherspoon, in his usual upbeat manner, led us in song. As
always, Bruce Williams entertained us with his music, playing some of the famous
show tunes, while we dined.
Jess Sowards did a good job of welcoming four visiting Rotarians. Sylvia
Pecaro and Eric Meyer did make ups. It was great to see George Kientzy back
with us.
Mrs. Rice (Georgina) gave us the stock market report. She laments,
"hopefully we will have a better year, this year. We are at the end of the growth
bust. The dollar is weak."
Ernie Simon, serving as Sergeant at Arms, gathered in a total of $96.00. As
he noted, there were too many AWOL's.
Nancy Owens will be heading up the Dictionary Project, starting next
Tuesday, January 10, at 9:00 a.m. She is looking for volunteers to help deliver the
dictionaries to third graders. She will begin at Orchard View Elementary.
She will be visiting the other schools on her list, on Wednesday 11, Thursday
12, and the following Tuesday January 17. Please contact Nancy at:
395-4292; she can use your help. Our club will be delivering to five schools in the
Delray Beach area. Rotary Sunrise Club will deliver dictionaries to the
remaining schools in the area.
Announcement: Our Membership Social will be held on January 26, 5:00 p.m.
at Palm Beach Photo Museum; compliments of Art and Fatima NeJame. We hope
you will invite someone you feel will be an asset to our Rotary Club, as
prospective member. Also, this is a great opportunity for you "newlyweds" to show
off your spouses.
Ernie Simon read a memorial resolution in honor of our beloved John Morgan,
a true Rotarian since 1948, when he joined Rotary in his hometown of
Youngstown, Ohio. John passed away on December 15, 2005. John joined Rotary Club of
Delray Beach, January 1984. He served as our president 1992-93. His
classification was Health Insurance. A copy of the memorial resolution will be
forwarded to his widow, Marian, and Family.
Dave Armstrong had the pleasure of introducing our guest speaker, Jennifer
Jenkins, International & Public Affairs Consultant. Jennifer is a native of
Atlanta, GA. She spends most of her time, however, traveling the globe,
trying to make a difference in lives.
In 1996-1997, Jennifer was a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar, studying in
Paris. She noted this is a large investment for Rotary; about $30,000.00. She
lives by the Rotary beliefs, stating that Rotary has transformed her life.
Her mission is to give back to the people of the world.
Jennifer related that Rotary has procured a 8.1 million dollar grant from
our federal government, supported by taxpayer's money, for Rotary's cause of
AIDS issues in East and Southern Africa. This money will be distributed
directly to Rotary, in that region. She is also working closely with the Gates
Foundation, to procure funds for the AIDS Project.
She informed us that AIDS is also a security issue. There is no quick fix
on the war on terrorism, but the answer is Education, Healthcare, and
Humanitarian Service, giving hope for the future. She stated: "children are born
with hope; let us help them to hold on to that hope."
She hopes that Rotary will choose to make the Rotarian Fellowship for
Fighting AIDS, as successful as it has been in Polio Plus Project.
Bill Talen tried again, unsuccessfully, to pick the "Ace." Bill, that gives
me yet another chance to win the "Green Hat" which now exceeds $487.00.
Next Week's Speaker: Dorothy Drummond, Author, and retired professor at IN
State University. The title of her book: "Holy Land, Whose Land?"
Things to Ponder:
Can you cry under water?
How important does a person have to be before they are considered
assassinated instead of just murdered?
