ROTARY RAMBLINGS

ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

January 10, 2006

Today, we reversed order with our meeting; our speaker had a national radio
talk show interview to do by phone, but sandwiched it in between her lecture,
and returning to chat with members and sell her book, after the meeting.

Our president, Leo Phillips, led the meeting. Gerry Meeks gave a lovely
invocation. Steve Rich led the enthusiastic crowd in song. Bruce Williams makes
all of us sound great, with his accompaniment. President Leo, in
celebration of his birthday, gave the club $61.00, to be given to the Scholastic
Achievement Scholarship. Leo, we hope your birthday is the best ever!

Nancy Owens welcomed the visiting Rotarians; there were about five. Mark
Denkler did a make up in the big town of Ellajay, GA.

Fred Bonardi gave a very positive stock report. Was it because he was
filling in for Georgina?

Roy Simon served as Sergeant at Arms, collecting a total of $209.00; good
job, Roy. Cliff Ripley donated $20.00, in honor of Randy Cooper's induction
into the FL Hall of Fame. Our biggest category was celebrating the new library
opening. John Callahan will be our speaker on January 24, giving us an
update on the new library. Afterwards, he is setting aside time to take our club
on a tour of the new facility. If you have not seen it, please make plans
to do so that day. You will be quite pleased that you did; it is quite
spectacular.

ANNOUNCEMENT: January 26, Membership Mixer; 5-7 p.m. Please give an
invitation to someone special; share Rotary with them; bring them along. If you
don't know how to tell them all about Rotary, just invite them; we will take
care of the details. We will need a count of attendees by January 24, so we
may prepare for them.

ANNOUNCEMENT: This will be an exciting evening; Rotary Club of Delray Beach
will be featured in the front row of the major tennis tournament, at the
Delray Beach Tennis Center, on January 31. We ought to gain fame for Rotary
that evening!! Come and join us; tickets are only $10.00 each.

President Leo Phillips introduced our guest speaker, Dorothy Drummond. She
was on the faculty at Indiana State University. She is now retired from
teaching, but devotes her time to writing, traveling and occasional guest
lecturing. She was born in San Diego, spent her childhood in CA; received her
education in the mid west. Her masters degree is in geography. She was awarded
the Fulbright Scholarship. She and her husband spent a year doing research in
Burma. She became acquainted with Israeli agricultural experts who later
invited them to spend time in Israel. Her intense interest with Israel and
Palestine began with this experience. Her book, Holy Land, Whose Land? Modern
Dilemma, Ancient Roots, is the outgrowth of extensive travel in the Middle
East, as well as research to uncover the causes of conflict plaguing the
region.

"No man, and no nation, is an island", says Ms. Drummond, whose travels have
taken her to some seventy countries. She brings a geographer's viewpoint,
and an abiding love for history, to first-hand observation wherever she is
traveling. She looks for relationships between the people and the land they
live on, between nations, and between the past and the present.

Ms. Drummond gave us an unbiased, fact filled lecture, highlighting
Jerusalem, and how three religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam want to claim it
as their own. She only had time to begin..........let's have her back, soon!

Today, I had the pleasure of accompanying our club's Dictionary Project
Chairperson, Nancy Owens (the eternal teacher) and Commissioner Pat Archer to
Orchard View Elementary School; the first school to visit, and hand out
dictionaries to third graders. This was a wonderful experience to see these students
react, and be so proud to own their very own dictionary. In some small way,
I hope Rotary Club of Delray Beach has instilled in these youngsters that we
really do care for them, and depend on them to be our leaders of tomorrow.
Nancy, along with her committee, will continue to visit four other schools
this week; spreading good cheer, and hopefully spark the interest of these
children to learn, learn, learn! Nancy is a natural with the children; our hats
off to her.
