ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
January 17, 2006
President Leo Phillips was at the helm, conducting yet another great Rotary
meeting. Sylvia Pecaro gave a lovely invocation. Sam Altdoerffer, doing a
terrific job, led us in singing. Of course, Bruce Williams was a tremendous
asset, with his accompaniment.
We had a new greeter, Nick Loeb, welcoming about six visiting Rotarians.
With his good looks, and smooth voice, he should run for public office. Sylvia
Pecaro tried to give away a banner to one of the visiting Rotarians; no luck.
We had make ups by Stormi Norem (with his bride, in Tahiti), and Dave Harden
(afraid his was not so exotic). We thank you both for your efforts.
Candace Etzler, serving as Sergeant at Arms, collected a total of $88.00.
She mentioned the Computer Program, benefiting Banyan Creek School. Our own
Bob Erickson and Candace are working on this project. If you have old
computers, get in touch with Bob; he will take it from there!
Nancy Owens gave us a report on "Project Dictionary." Last week, she and
her committee, consisting of Pat Archer, Leo Phillips, Bill and Charlotte
Adams, Lyn Huckle and myself, delivered personal dictionaries to third graders in
five Delray Beach schools. This was a rewarding experience for all of us. I
almost forgot, "Dictionary Dog" was always the star of the show.
John Callahan introduced our Student of the Month, John Bullard, Jr., whose
father, John Bullard, Sr. proudly accompanied him. John is such an
accomplished young man for his age; he already has a two page, typed resume. Besides
all his scholastic and athletic accomplishments, John is "self employed," as
an A+ certified computer technician; Network certified, network engineer; he
designs and builds high end computers, networks, integrated systems, etc.
John's objective is to attend University of Chicago, or University of FL.
He aspires to graduate with a degree in Computer Science. He is also in the
top 5% of his class. One of John's proud moments was when he was chosen, by
the student body, to be "Best All Around; Most Involved;" and especially when
he and his girlfriend won "Cutest Couple!"
John introduced his choice of "Teacher of the Month," Elizabeth Zappolo.
She has been teaching 23 years; at Atlantic High School since 1988. She is
currently in charge of the new teacher program at Atlantic and very proud of her
National Board Certification, and also the success of IB Program at Atlantic
High.

Dave Armstrong had the pleasure of introducing our guest speaker, Jim
Sugarman, Executive Director of the Lung Association of Southeast Florida,
consisting of Palm Beach and five other counties. Their mission statement reads: To
prevent lung disease, promote lung health and to be seen as the premiere
source on lung health in Southeast Florida.
Their purpose is helping children and adults live with lung disease. Their
objective is to educate children and adults to prevent lung disease. They
began in 1937, and remain dedicated to fighting lung disease, a leading cause
of death in America, and the number one killer of infants under age one.
Their motto is "When You Can't Breathe, Nothing Else Matters."

Next week: John Callahan, (proud) Director of Delray Beach Public Library,
will be our guest speaker. After the meeting, John has arranged to give our
club a personal tour of the new library at: 100 West Atlantic Avenue (first
block west of Swinton). There should be parking behind the library.
Our club was grieved to learn of the death of one of our recent new members,
Mimi Hutchison. A service will be held for her on Thursday. Our
condolences go out to her family.
