ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
January 24, 2006
President Leo Phillips was at the reins, leading yet another great Rotary
meeting. Lyn Huckle gave the invocation. Jimmy Weatherspoon, enjoying the
lovely day, led us in a couple of favorites. Dave Armstrong saluted our
musician, Bruce Williams, who always greets us with his familiar songs.
We sang Happy Birthday to Lyn Huckle, who graciously donated $80.00 to the
club. We congratulate Steve and Helen Rich on their 57th anniversary; he
donated $57.00 in honor of it. We wish all of you the best.
Little Mark Denkler served as official Greeter today, welcoming our "Island
Boy," Jeff Dennis, from the Bahamas. There were ten other Rotarians visiting
from the frozen north. Of these, we had two "Snowbirds" joining us; David
Hefter, Wilmington, DE, and Jon Walker, Lancaster, PA. We welcome each of
you. Tony Allerton gave the banner.
Sergeant at Arms, Tony Allerton, gathered in a whopping $252.00, or was it
$1,252.00? After all, Cliff Ripley graciously matched our funds with
$1,000.00, for the Scholastic Scholarship Fund. Cliff, we thank you. Leo Phillips
donated $20.00, because his picture was in the newspaper.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: DUES ARE DUE! See Sally Dye, now.
Thursday, January 26, 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Rotary Membership Mixer; Palm Beach
Photo Museum, Second Avenue, Pineapple Grove; compliments of Art and Fatima
NeJame. Light refreshments will be served. Bring your significant other,
along with a friend that would be a good Rotarian. Let's introduce more
people to our wonderful service organization; The Rotary Club of Delray Beach.
Tuesday, January 31, Rotary Night at the Delray Beach Tennis Center; 5:00 to
5:15. Tickets for those signed up, will be available at next meeting.
April 19, Frank Devlin, Past President of Rotary International, will be at
the Kravis Center; 6:30 p.m. Dinner will be served. Mr. Devlin will be
speaking on the Bequest Society of Rotary.
Ernie Simon read a Memorial Resolution for Elaine "Mimi" Hutchison. Mimi
passed away on January 12. She was an interior designer in Delray Beach for
thirty years. Ernie noted we will experience a sense of great loss. He will
forward a copy of the resolution to her two children and family.
We were pleased to have John Callahan, Director of Delray Beach Library, and
also a very involved member of our Rotary Club, to be our guest speaker.
Along with his assistant, "Fire Marshall" Adams, John presented a slide show of
the new library. He started with the groundbreaking, June 2004, following
the construction, until completion. As most of you know, our club donated
$5,000.00 to the new library, to have our name on one of the reading rooms
(Which will be done shortly). After the meeting, John met about fifteen of us at
the library, giving us a personal tour of the lovely facility. If you have
not been there, take time to just pop in for about fifteen minutes; you will
be glad you did. John, we thank you for the tour and update.
No, Leo did not win the "Green Hat!" It is now worth close to $800.00.
