ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
February 7, 2006
Ah! We're back on line. I hope some of you missed not having a newsletter
last week. The old computer went to its grave (well, not exactly, I'm sure
Bob Erickson can include it in his "Computers for Kids"Program.)
President Leo Phillips led the meeting, with a "packed house." Jimmy
Weatherspoon led the enthusiastic group in singing.
Fred Bonardi gave the stock report, stating: "it's a dull day in the market."
Also, giving the Sergeant at Arms report, he collected a total of $120.00.
Roy Simon reminded us of the Delray Dunes Pro-Am Golf benefit, for Bethesda
Hospital. It will be held this coming Monday, 9:30 a.m. Bob Erickson gave
$5.00, to celebrate five years of "bliss." Joyce Lunsford gave $10.00, in
honor of our friend, Egon Kurz, whom we are looking forward to seeing again.
Nancy King introduced her guest, Carole Pierpont, who works with Parks and
Recreation. Bill Adams had as his guests, sons Teak and Tyler. A banner was
given to Laura Hawks, of CT.
Our Assistant Governor, Betsy Owen, told of the upcoming "Party of the
Century," sailing to Nassau (also known as District 6930 Conference.) She has
brochures describing details.
President Phillips read thank you letters from the principal of S. D. Spady
School, thanking us for our participation in the Dictionary Project; also,
from CCCC for our contribution of the wreaths to them.
There were 27 Rotarians from our club attending Rotary Night at the Delray
Beach Tennis Center Competition, last Tuesday evening. A good time was had by
all. (Next time, we will take portable stadium seats with us!)
REMINDER: Dues are due!!! Please see Sally Dye immediately, if you have
not paid your dues.
UPCOMING EVENTS: BINGO PARTY! Thursday, March 16. Please mark your
calendar. Your presence is requested, for a good time, and support of our club
projects. We are looking for raffle prizes; please volunteer these to Lyn
Huckle, before she has to ask for them. Thank you.
Frank Devlin, Past President, RI, will be at a dinner at the Kravis Center
on April 19, on behalf of the Bequest Society of RI.
Nancy Owens has volunteered to head up our RYLA program this year. Nancy,
thanks.
Nancy King had the pleasure of introducing our guest speakers. Nancy and
Tony Durante, (who is married to a Japanese) have had the pleasure of
accompanying Student Exchange students for the past three years, to our Sister City,
Miyazu, Japan. There were seven high school students from Atlantic High
School on this trip. Each of them told of their most memorable experiences on
this visit. It was so endearing to listen to these excited young people tell us
about their trip. The food made a big, pleasurable, impression on them.
They were all astonished at how the Japanese culture keeps the boys and girls
segregated at school and in social environment. The "family togetherness" was
quite impressionable on them. One stated how the "family" gets together
every evening for dinner. Each student spoke briefly about their visit, and
when asked if they would go again, if the opportunity arose, they all agreed
that, hopefully, this is the beginning of many global trips to come, during
their lifetime.
Initially, there were to be five students to go on this trip, but the City
of Delray Beach raised enough funds for the two alternates to accompany them;
this was certainly a nice gesture. Also, Miyazu, Japan is the birthplace of
George Morikami, our benefactor of the land that our wonderful Morikami
Japanese Gardens and Museum is located on.
Our speakers were: Tony Durante; Nancy King; and students, Danielle Birney,
Jessica Crowell, Reynold Urias, Julia Yip, Ray Ferron, Lukas Jaworski and
Rumen Iordanov. Three of them were Juniors; four of them were Seniors. Our
city was well represented with this group of youths (this, of course, includes
Nancy).
Next week: We are awaiting Pat Archer's reply on our speaker. She has
informed us that Mayor Perlman, our original speaker, may have to be included in
the meeting with Scripps, being held at the same time as our meeting. She has
promised us a good "fill in," if necessary. I will inform you ASAP.
