ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
February 14, 2006
I hope today is a very special day for all of you; that you will take time
to tell those that are special to you that you love them. Love is what makes
the world go round.
Early today, President Leo Phillips led a very informative board meeting, at
Ellie's Marilyn Room. Much is accomplished at these meetings. The club is
invited to attend these meetings; always held the second Tuesday of each
month; 7:30 a.m. at the diner.
I am posting two prospective new members for membership, after the board
voted this a. m. I present Edwin P. Voss, who has been with us as a snowbird,
in the past. Mr. Voss was in banking, and a longtime Rotarian, in Tucson,
AZ. The other is Tom Stanley, a well known local attorney. Both these men
will be assets to our club.
President Leo Phillips led our noon meeting. Dave O'Connell gave a
"heartfelt" invocation. Jimmy Weatherspoon led us in a couple of favorites,
appropriate for the holiday. It seems that Bruce Williams always misses his
accolades, in his hurry to meet his next gig. Bruce, we love you.
Bruce Wenzel was back at the podium, welcoming about a dozen or so visiting
Rotarians. Fred Bonardi presented our banner to a Rotarian, visiting from
Rochester, NH. Nick Loeb introduced a lovely visitor today; Jamie Voss.
Sylvia Pecaro did a make up online.
Fred Bonardi gave us a great stock report: the Dow was up 121 points; NASDAQ
up 22 points; S&P up 12. Looks like a good day for the market!
Fred also collected $93.00, serving as Sergeant at Arms. There were no
birthdays, or anniversaries; he had to "dig for it."
Dave O'Connell is doing a terrific job of updating our information for our
club "bluebook." Please cooperate with Dave, by taking a look at the
information he has on you, and make necessary changes, or initial that all is
correct. He is trying hard to complete this project ASAP. He will mention this
again next week.
ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR UPCOMING EVENTS:
BINGO FUNDRAISER, MARCH 16, ELLIE'S FLAMINGO ROOM; Tickets are $50.00.
There will be a choice of three entrees. We will ask you to make that decision
by March 7, in order for the caterer to order. Also, we will have a silent
auction before the Bingo games. We are looking for auction items. ( If you have
a favorite restaurant that you go to, ask them for a gift certificate. We
sure miss Wally Doud, and wish he would move back; he always came through for
us.) I hope all of you will attend, since this is one of our fundraisers
for the year.
DELRAY AFFAIR, APRIL 21, 22, 23. Dave Armstrong is looking for volunteers to
help make this another success for us.
RYLA, APRIL 6-9. Nancy Owens will chair the event, for our club.
APRIL 19, FRANK DEVLIN, KRAVIS CENTER. He is Past President of RI; now is
President of Rotary Foundation. He will be featured at this dinner.
APRIL 27, SOCIAL/MEMBERSHIP at the lovely Wright By The Sea; hostess, Dr.
Gay Vela.
MAY 20, DIGITAL PHOTO WORKSHOP, PALM BEACH PHOTO MUSEUM; Hosts are Art and
Fatima NeJame. ALL proceeds will be given to our club; this is a
complimentary workshop, given by the NeJameses. The price is $50.00, and is open to the
public. Please tell all those people who got digital cameras for Christmas
that this is their big chance to learn to use it!
Pat Archer had the pleasure of introducing our guest speaker, (and asking
him to be her Valentine) Joe Gilley, Director of Old School Square. Joe is a
dynamic speaker, and leader in our wonderful community. He has been with OSS
for 14 years now. He moved to Delray in 1976, while he was a mere child. He
acknowledged our members that are affiliated with OSS. (For those of you
that are unaware why Bruce Galloway leaves early each Tuesday, he works at OSS
every Tuesday.) Joe also mentioned some of his mentors; George Elmore,
Spencer Pompey and Libby Wesley. (Some of the people who are the "backbone" of
this community.)
Joe told us of the experience he and a group of people had when envisioning
to turn the old school into a cultural center. Well, it has become "big
business," creating a 17 million economic impact on our downtown area.
Joe showed us the architect's rendering of the necessary changes needed to
showcase our "anchor," OSS. There will be a "facelift" to the front entrance
to OSS, including a lovely fountain. He assured us that the bricks placed
there by our Rotary Club, honoring our "Service Above Self" recipients will not
be disturbed. He invited us to fill the whole front walk with "recipients!"
That's a challenge for us.
There will be a park and a parking garage in the area behind OSS. He
anticipates the structure for the parking garage, which will feature shops on the
first floor, will start next month. The park will accommodate many events to
come. Delray Beach has done a cultural plan; we are doing it right.
Joe mentioned they hope to partner with our new library, which is now only a
few steps away. For more information: _www.oldschool.org_
(http://www.oldschool.org) . You may phone 561-243-7922 (Exhibit information: Extension. 305.)
Next Week: (Tentatively) Shelter Box USA (A Rotary Club International
Project.)
HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY TO ALL!
