ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
February 21, 2006
Today was quite a day in Education support, at Rotary Club of Delray Beach.
The house was packed. President Leo Phillips led an awesome meeting. Hack
Allen gave the invocation. Sam Altdoeffer, accompanied by Bruce Williams, led
the singing.
We sang Happy Birthday to Bruce Galloway. Bruce, we hope you had a good
birthday, and wish you many more healthy years.
Bill Adams, just back from skiing in Montana, looking refreshed, welcomed
all those refugees from the frozen north. Bernie Shapiro presented our banner
to one of the visitors. Make ups were done by Bill Arnst and Eric Meyer.
Georgina Rice gave the stock report. She noted the market was down at the
time, but oil prices were up; not surprising any of us.
Tony Allerton, Sergeant at Arms collected a total of $153.00. John Arnold
gave $10.00 in honor of his son visiting; Joyce Lunsford gave $10.00 in honor
of her son, John, visiting; Bruce Galloway gave $10.00 for his birthday. Art
NeJame donated $10.00, because his picture was in the newspaper, regarding
the success of FotoFusion 2006. We thank each of you for your generosity.
President Phillips read a letter from the principal of Pine Grove Elementary
School, complimenting our club for our participation in the Dictionary
Project for third graders, throughout the Delray area. Again, we thank Nancy
Owens and her committee, for her role in this.
This is the second publication for membership for Edwin P. Voss, retired
banker, and Tom Stanley, Attorney.
We had our Student of the Month, Ferry Fleurimond, and his chosen teacher,
for Teacher of the Month, "Coach" Mike Sicard.
Ferry is a native of Haiti, arriving here five years ago, not speaking
English. He is now 17, and absorbing his education like a sponge. His class rank
is 75 out of 389; his GPA is 3.8333. Some of his activities include playing
varsity soccer and volleyball. He has excelled in Boy Scouts. Ferry hopes
to attend FAU and get into the medical field, becoming a pediatrician. (This
young man's principal was beaming with pride, as she sat at the speaker's
table.)
Mike Sicard, has been teaching and coaching at Atlantic High School for
eight years. He holds the award of "Coach of the Year." We congratulate each of
you.
President Leo Phillips announced that today is a great day in the history of
Rotary Club of Delray Beach. He noted that over the years, our club has
provided over $250,000.00 in scholarships for Atlantic High School Seniors.
"Today, we are proud to announce a further step in providing a scholarship to an
Atlantic High Senior. Thanks to the generosity and perseverance of Cliff
Ripley, the Founder of the Palm Beach County Scholastic Achievement Foundation,
we are endowing in perpetuity, a scholarship for an Atlantic High Senior, to
be given through the auspices of the Palm Beach County Scholastic
Achievement Foundation. Cliff has generously given $4,000.00 to the endowment of this
scholarship, and would like to make the final presentation today. The club
has raised, obtained contributions, and is making the presentation of the
remaining $14,000.00 today." For those in attendance, saw President Phillips
present Cliff with the "huge" check. (It had been printed on a large board). He
then introduced Cliff Ripley, who has been a Rotarian for 46 years.
Mr. Ripley introduced his beautiful wife, Madeleine, who is from Normandy.
He explained to us that she was inquisitive about Rotary, so after
explaining, she wanted to contribute, also. Therefore, she donated $2,000.00 of his
$4,000.00 contribution. We thank both of you for your generosity. Mr. Ripley
took the opportunity to tell us of his days as principal of "Seacrest High
School" (former name of Atlantic High). He also served as Assistant
Superintendent of Schools for ten years.
Mr. Ripley then introduced the current principal of Atlantic High School,
Principal Kathleen Weigle, who is #1 principal in the state of Florida, and has
been at Atlantic for seven years. She is very proud to be "in charge" of
the beautiful new facility, which cost 62 million to build. She boasted that
their programs are second to none. She invited us to come visit the beautiful
campus.
All in all, it was another hallmark day for Rotary Club of Delray Beach.
