ROTARY RAMBLINGS

ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

February 28, 2006

President Leo Phillips led still another fabulously well attended meeting;
there were "snowbirds" everywhere. Tom Cook gave the invocation. (Tom, you
need to come see us more often; nice invocation.) Jim Weatherspoon, in his
usual jovial mood, led us in song. Bruce Williams, your music is always the
"tops."

We want to wish a very special Happy Birthday to Jim Pignato; he is
celebrating his 80th birthday. He generously donated $80.00 for the
occasion.

Harvey Brown, Jr., being in rare form, (so like his father) welcomed the
visiting Rotarians and guest of Rotarians. There were at least seven of
them. We had make ups by Lyn Huckle, Tom Cook (at least 4), Bill Arnst and
Harvey Brown. We thank you for taking the time to keep our attendance
records near the top.

The club will be installing our newest member, Tom Stanley, next week.
Let's all be there to support Tom. We will install Edwin Voss, upon his
return.

Fred Bonardi gave the stock report; down; down; down; a far cry from last
week. Fred then put on his Sergeant at Arms hat, giving us a great report
there. John Arnold gave us $10.00; Nick Loeb gave $20.00, encouraging all
of us to "Get Out and Vote!" (Election is March 14, for two seats on City
Commission.) All in all, Fred collected a total of $210.00 today.

President Phillips showed us a card of thanks from the third grade students
at Banyan Elementary Creek School. The card showed that the children are
looking up words, and using the dictionaries given to them through our
"Dictionary Project." Nancy Owens, I know this is very rewarding to you.

President Phillips reminded us of our 53 years continued support of a Little
League Baseball Team. Their opening season will be on March 4, 9:30 a. m.,
at Miller Park. He asked that our club be there in support of our team.

Other upcoming events: BINGO FUNDRAISER, THURSDAY, MARCH 16, 6:00 P.M.,
ELLIE'S FLAMINGO ROOM. There will be a "sign up sheet" in the foyer again
next week. Lyn Huckle will remind you of it, and collect your money for the
event. The price is $50.00 per person. This will include one ticket for
one drink (cash bar available), and a dinner of your choice of Stuffed
Chicken Breast, Prime Rib, or Norwegian Salmon; also, it will include one
Bingo card. There will be a Silent Auction table, also. Bring your
checkbook and bid on the item of your choice. All proceeds will go into our
Scholarship Fund. We are looking for nice auction items; look around and
see what you can contribute. Your favorite restaurant would be an ideal
place to get a gift certificate. (This event will also serve as a make up,
for those of you who might need one.)

Other events: RYLA, April 9, Vero Beach; Frank Devlin, April 19; Delray
Affair, April 21-23; April 27, Membership Mixer, Wright By The Sea, 5-7.

Today, our guest speaker was Beth Palmer, member of Lakewood Ranch Rotary
Club, in the Sarasota area. She, her husband and daughter are all
Rotarians. They are associated with Shelter Box Project, USA, a Rotary Club
project. Mrs. Palmer is the Executive Director; sponsor club Lakewood Ranch
Rotary Club.

Shelter Box was established in 2000 by the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard,
Cornwell, UK, after being introduced to the Club by British Rotarian and
retired Royal Navy officer, Tom Henderson. The grassroots Shelter Box
program has quickly spread throughout the Rotary club world network with
national affiliates now established in the US, Australia, and Canada. What
started as Tom Henderson's concept for disaster relief has now become an
international reality to more than 185,000 people in Africa, the Middle
East, the Caribbean, and South East Asia. Of course, we can now add our own
victims of Katrina and Rita. Many of these people are still living in the
tents, sleeping in the sleeping bags, etc., given by Shelter Box. All of
these huge boxes are packed and stored in the UK, awaiting need for them.
Each one bears the Rotary "wheel." Then, the flag of the country donating
them, is also on the "big green box," as well as on the tents.

Shelter Box is committed to providing humanitarian aid on an on-going basis
to people around the world. Shelter Box asks all Rotary Clubs to make an
annual commitment to sponsoring one Shelter Box per year, to ensure that
those with the greatest need will find aid and relief in the form of a big
green box.

Next Week: Coach Howard Schnellenberg, of the mighty Owls, of FAU, will be
our guest speaker.
