ROTARY RAMBLINGS

ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

March 7, 2006

President Leo Phillips presided over another packed house. We had many
visiting Rotarians, and friends of Rotarians. Joyce Lunsford read a
beautiful invocation, written for her by a former member, Rev. Jim Atchison.
( Jim has since retired to the mountains of Tennessee; a touch of Heaven!)
Sam Altdoerffer, with his wonderful singing voice, led the singing. As
always, Bruce Williams gets all of us into a happy mood, with his music.

We sang to Bill Adams twice; once for his birthday; once for his
anniversary; he still donated money! He donated $58.00 for his birthday,
and $31.00 for his and Charlotte's anniversary. The best to both of you.

We had two international visiting Rotarians, and six domestic visitors.
Bill Morse donated our banner to Bill Van Valkenberg, of Seattle, WA, whose
club is among one of the largest in the nation, boasting over 800 members.
Some of the other distinguished visitors were Steve Lang, Art Reef and Don
Lerch.

We said good-bye to our longtime friend, Egon Kurz today. He is moving to
CA to be with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He
already has his appointment book open, booking all the activities he will be
enjoying. Egon, we love you, and will miss you.

Make ups were done by Dave Richardson and Ernie Simon, who by the way,
brought a lovely lady named Norma with him today. It seems she is a big fan
of Coach Howard Schnellenberger.

Mrs. Rice (Georgina), gave us the stock report. The DOW was up , but NASDAQ
and S&P were down at time of her report. She called it "a mixed day."

Sergeant at Arms Ernie Simon was all smiles, reporting that Bucknell was
undefeated in the Patriot League. Bernie Shapiro gave $25.00 in honor of
Egon Kurz; John Arnold gave $20.00; Bill Adams gave a total of $89.00.
Ernie collected a total of $210.00 today!

Today, President Phillips had the honor of inducting our newest, and
youngest member into our club, Mr. Tom Stanley. He is a local attorney. On
inside information, I learned he is the son of Carol MacMillan-Stanley; the
grandson of Neil MacMillan; great nephew of Hugh MacMillan, long time judge
of Palm Beach County. I'm sure many of you know his family. We welcome
you, and look forward to working with you in Rotary.

OUR CURRENT BIG ANNOUNCEMENT: BINGO PARTY/FUNDRAISER, THURSDAY, MARCH 16,
6:00 P.M., ELLIE'S FLAMINGO ROOM. If you have not signed up for this event,
please do so immediately. We must have a count for the caterers. We are
still looking for silent auction items; please help us out. Lyn Huckle
732-8224, will gladly accept your gifts. The dynamic duo of Mark Denkler
and Dave Armstrong will be "rolling" the winning Bingo numbers.

Wow! Each week, we get closer to a winner of the Green Hat proceeds. It is
now up to $1,023.00! Anne Bright eliminated one more card this week.

President Phillips introduced our guest speaker, who most everyone in this
area knows; "Coach" Howard Schnellenberger, Director of Football
Operations/Head Coach at Florida Atlantic University; "The Mighty Owls!"
He joined the FAU staff May 1, 1998, with an unheard-of opportunity; build a
football team from scratch. Since that time, he has raised more than $15
million, and hosted an FAU football television show, a weekly radio show and
has been a regular at luncheons and gatherings. In January of 1999, the
Board of Regents approved FAU adding football.

Howard Schnellenberger has been part of four collegiate national
championships. His 1983 Miami Hurricanes won that school's first title,
winning the 50th Anniversary Orange Bowl. He was offensive coordinator for
"Bear" Bryant at Alabama, when they won championships in 1961, 1964 and
1965.

A native of Louisville, KY, Schnellenberger returned in 1985 to build a
college football contender for the first time ever. His team finished
10-1-1, and won the Fiesta Bowl. This was the highlight of the most
successful decade in U of L football history.

Coach Schnellenberger has brought "The Owls" a long way, already. His team
was accepted into the Sunbelt Conference last year. He lost 30 graduating
seniors this past year, thus challenging him to rebuild a team.

FAU owns 1,000 acres, adjoining the campus, which Coach Schnellenberger
envisions football and basketball facilities setting on this property by
2009. He stated that when this happens, FAU will be in a class of its own.

Next week, our guest speaker will be Jean Starkey, Immediate Past District
Governor.
