ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
March 14, 2006
The day began with a group of dedicated Rotarians attending our early
morning Board of Director's meeting. It was well attended; much was
accomplished. We were honored to have in attendance, District 6930 Governor
Ron Hirsch, and Assistant Governor Betsy Owen. They were very complimentary
to the accomplishments of our club. I must agree, we do have a great Rotary
Club!
At noon, President Leo Phillips led yet another fabulous meeting. He also
gave a lovely invocation. Then..our favorite Irishman, Jimmy Weatherspoon,
led us in some old Irish favorites, since this week celebrates St. Patty's
Day. Bruce Williams "outdid himself," with all the old favorite Irish tunes
he played for us. He sure did set the atmosphere for celebrating.
Jimmy also led us in singing Happy Birthday to Inga Talmon, who donated
$39.00, for her 39th birthday (huh?). Then we got to sing to Jimmy, who
donated $40.00, for his birthday!
Bruce Wenzel graciously welcomed ten visiting Rotarians, nine from the
frozen north; one "Island Boy." Make ups were done by Dave Harden and Tom
Cook. (We had a few AWOL's, but won't mention names.)
Our Sergeant at Arms Candace Etzler did a terrific job today, collecting a
total of $208.00. Andy and Ernie were betting heavy on their favorite teams
- one whole dollar each!
BINGO FUNDRAISER - THURSDAY, MARCH 16, 6:00 P.M.; ELLIE'S FLAMINGO ROOM.
It's not too late to get in on the fun; just call Lyn Huckle at: 732-8224,
or Ellie at: 278-0493.
APRIL 5, GROUP OUTTING: Our club has sponsored the Bluejays Little League
Team for 54 years; let's get out and support them with our attendance. They
will be playing at 6:30, Field One, Miller Field.
APRIL 19 - Frank Devlin, (former president RI) will be at the Kravis Center.
APRIL 21-23 - Delray Affair. Dave Armstrong needs help from everyone;
please sign up to help out, in some capacity. It's a fun time, and a golden
opportunity to let the world know about Rotary Club of Delray Beach.
APRIL 27 - Mixer, Wright By the Sea, compliments of Dr. Gay Vela. Bring a
prospect; bring yourself!
APRIL 29 - Rotary College, Indian River. Lean more about Rotary.
MAY 20 - Palm Beach Photo Museum/Centre, will host a digital photography
workshop, taught by Art and Fatima NeJame. All proceeds go to our Rotary
Club. We thank them in advance, for their generosity. This is open to the
public; invite all the bad photographers you know; they need to participate!
John Callahan, Vocational Service Director, for our club, introduced our
Student of the Month, Amy Hoskin, and her proud parents, Larry and Shawn.
This young lady has quite a resume for her age; way too long for this
newsletter. She is in the I. B. Program at Atlantic High School Dual
enrollment courses include health, college composition and strategies for
college success. A few of her other achievements are as follows: FCAT
Outstanding Math Achievement; Who's Who Among America's High School Students
(academic); Eagles for Excellence; Varsity Volleyball's "Best All Around
Athlete of the Year;" National Honor Society member. She has done more
community service than many adults! It seems one of her proudest donations
has been when she donated 10" of her hair for cancer patient wigs. Amy
hopes to go to University of Georgia, and study Finance. We wish this
outstanding young lady the very best.
Nicholas Bergan was Amy's choice for Teacher of the Month. She stated that
he was very "difficult." She admires his way of teaching. He received his
BA Degree at St. Louis University; his Master Degree at Florida State. He
has been teaching four years; two at Atlantic High School, where he teaches
Economics. He enjoys FSU Football and playing golf.
Our guest speaker today was Jean Starkey, Immediate Past District Governor
6930. She is presently Membership Coordinator for Zone 34, entailing 14
districts. In July, she will become District 6930 Foundation Chairperson
for three years.
Jean Starkey was introduced to Rotary when she became an Ambassadorial
Scholarship recipient, studying in South Africa. When she returned to her
native Merritt Island, Florida, she went into business; no one thought to
invite her to become a Rotarian, herself. She had to go "knock on doors,"
and ask to become a Rotarian.
Jean has done studies with Rotary presidents under age 40; she picked their
brains for answers to bringing in younger members. "Why did you join
Rotary? What was the process? What procedure are you using?" (to bring in
new members.)
There is much we can do; let's get together and entice others to want to be
a part of this vibrant "Service Above Self" organization. Ms. Starkey, we
thank you for all your comments and great ideas for membership.
We now have $1,063.00 in Green Hat winnings, since Leo failed to pick the
Ace.
NEXT WEEK: Guest speaker will be Mayor Jeff Pearlman (finally).
