ROTARY RAMBLINGS

ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

March 21, 2006

Spring has smiled on us; low humidity; balmy days; that's paradise; yes,
Delray Beach is paradise.  President Leo Phillips led our meeting, with
finesse.  Rev. Andrew Hall gave a lovely invocation (sounds like the man has
lots of practice).  Jimmy Weatherspoon led the singing, dedicating a song to
his brother, Elijah, visiting from Alabama.  As always, our fine pianist,
Bruce Williams entertained us, royally.  (Bruce, you always miss all the
accolades bestowed on you, by having to leave early.)

Ernie Simon welcomed all our guests; most of them "snowbirds."  Roy Simon
presented our banner to Rich Rubin, of Monticello, NY.  Make ups were done
by Sylvia Pecaro and Tom Stanley.  Thank you both for helping keep our
attendance up. 

Fred Bonardi smiled all the while he was giving the stock report.  The DOW
was up 49 points; the NASDAQ up 18 points; the S&P was up 5 points.  He also
made many people in the audience happy with this report.  After all, he was
sitting-in for Georgina. 

Roy Simon, Sergeant at Arms, collected $86.00.  Lyn Huckle donated $10.00,
in honor of the successful Bingo Fundraiser.  For those of you that missed
the party, you missed a fun evening.  Due to the generosity of Fidelity
Federal, Shirley Clark, Manager, they donated $500.00.  Lyn Huckle
generously donated; so did Bill Talen.  Our big winner for the evening was
Reeve Bright, Anne's husband.  He was so excited that he turned his chair
over, as he went to claim his big prize money!  Reeve donated back to the
club, a very generous portion of his earnings, and we thank you for that.
We cleared up to $2,500.00.  Again, we want to thank the comedy duo of
Harvey Brown, Jr. and Mark Denkler for emceeing and calling the Bingo.  They
kept the audience in stitches, while they "fumbled, er, tumbled" the ball.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:  Dave O'Connell is working diligently on the upgraded
membership book.  It was announced that the old pictures from the previous
book cannot be used.  Therefore, for the next couple of weeks, come to
Rotary wearing your best smile, so Photographer Art NeJame can put you in
the line up and capture your best smile.  (I liked the old one; after all,
it is five years younger!)

April 5, is Little League Night for our club.  Our Blue jays, our Rotary
sponsored team, will play in Field One, Miller Park.  Time: 6:30 p.m.

April 19, join us at the Rotary Foundation Dinner, at the Cohen Pavilion at
the Kravis Center, West Palm Beach.  Speaker will be Frank Devlyn, Past
Rotary International President, 200-2001, and currently Chair, Rotary
Foundation.   He elevates Rotarians to a new level of understanding of the
politics, programs and financing of our Rotary Foundation.  The cost of the
event is $60.00 per person.  Reservations: Kim Parkey, 561-799-6154.
Reception: 6:30 p.m.  Dinner: 7:30 p.m.

APRIL 21-23, DELRAY AFFAIR!  Dave Armstrong is looking for you...he needs
your volunteer services, any day you can work.  

APRIL 27, Membership Mixer - Wright by the Sea, compliments of Dr. Gay Vela,
owner.

APRIL 29, ROTARY UNIVERSITY - 8:30 to noon.

MAY 20, Digital Photography Class, Palm Beach Photo Museum - compliments of
Art and Fatima NeJame.  All proceeds go to our Rotary Club.

Our guest speaker was not the mayor...he was Joe Gray, Assistant Director of
CRA.  (The mayor was called out of town, before our meeting.)  Mr. Gray gave
us an update on all the positive "happenings" in Delray Beach, specifically
the west side of Swinton Avenue, north and south of Atlantic Avenue.  He
gave us the plan for beautifying the main corridor from I-95 to downtown
Delray Beach, via Atlantic Avenue.  He told us of the plans for diversified,
improved housing, and quality goods and services venues.  Many parks and
"green spaces" are planned, or are already in existence.  An example is the
Catherine Strong Park, being dedicated on April 8, 10:00 a.m.  It contains
2,800 square feet splash park/playground.  It has two basketball courts; two
picnic pavilions; fitness trail and restrooms.  This is located at 1500 SW
6th St.  BIG things are happening in this town.

Our green hat was won by Mr. Gutterman, a visiting Rotarian.  The pot was
$1,122.00.  Next week, it starts over.  

Next week, our speaker will be Ed Rowen, Team Leader, Rotary GSE - India
Trip.
