ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
April 11, 2006
Spring is in the air, and Hack got the rain he had been praying for! Today
was such a magnificent day; much to be thankful for, as Bill Adams expressed
in his invocation.
President Leo Phillips started his day by presiding over our monthly board
meeting; then, over our noon meeting. Susan Miller did a good job,
welcoming our three visiting Rotarians. Bob Erickson, we thank you for
doing a make up. Mark Denkler introduced his visitor, Louise Glover.
Bill Arnst generously donated $71.00 for his 39th birthday; thanks, Bill.
Fred Bonardi gave a "grim" stock report. He did better, however, giving the
Sergeant at Arms report. He collected a total of $180.00.
Our club attended a Little League game on Wednesday evening, starring our
Rotary sponsored, Blue Jays.
I am happy to report we had overwhelming response from the members,
regarding our members buy, and wear our Rotary Club shirts at our events.
Anne Bright is checking on price and delivery; will send out a memo on this.
I thank those of you that are interested.
APRIL 19 - Frank Devlin, Kravis Center, Cohen Pavilion - Reception 6:30 PM;
Dinner 7:30 PM. As you know, Frank Delyn is Past Rotary International
President, 200-2001, and currently Chair, Rotary Foundation Trustees. Cost

APRIL 21, 22, 23 - DELRAY AFFAIR - Dave Armstrong is still looking for
volunteers to fill a couple of time slots. It's always better to have "too
many" than not enough workers. Please volunteer a couple of hours of your
time; it is very rewarding.
APRIL 27 - MEMBERSHIP MIXER - WRIGHT BY THE SEA - For those of you who have
not experienced a visit to Dr. Gay Vela's lovely facility, you are in for a
treat! Please attend with (or without) your significant other, plus, invite
someone that you feel would be a good Rotarian. This is a casual event,
outdoors, in her tiki hut. She has employed a wonderful Asian Restaurant to
cater the food. We need your commitment ASAP.
MAY 20 - DIGITAL PHOTO WORKSHOP - PALM BEACH PHOTO CENTRE - Workshop for all
digital camera users, compliments of Art and Fatima NeJame. ALL proceeds
donated to Rotary Club of Delray Beach. This is an open to the public
workshop. Price: $50.00.
Bill Adams introduced our Student of the Month, Shaina Brown. Shaina is a
vivacious young lady; a senior at Atlantic High School. She has been a star
athlete in track and field for four years, as well as excelling
academically. She is also very involved in her church. She plans to attend
University of Central FL, majoring in Physical Therapy. She then plans to
return to Delray to practice. She is also a "future" Rotarian.
Our Teacher of the Month is Ms. Barnes, English Teacher at Atlantic High
School. Shaina appreciates and admires Ms. Barnes' dedication to the
students. She spoke quite highly of Shaina, also.
Dave Armstrong had the pleasure of introducing our speaker, Mr. Allan Yott,
of the Wheelchair Foundation. This is a foundation, well endorsed by Rotary
Clubs, worldwide. Wheelchair Foundation provides hope for individuals in
about 140 countries. A DVD documentary was presented, showing the happy,
happy faces of those people, young and old, receiving their wheelchairs and
their independence, for the first time in their lives. It was heart-warming
to observe. I was astounded to learn that about 10,000 wheelchairs are
manufactured monthly, in China, to help meet the needs of people, worldwide.
Mr. Yott had one wheelchair on display; there are five different sizes
available, to meet the needs.
