ROTARY RAMBLINGS

ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

April 25, 2006

The group was all =93abuzz=94 with tales of the Delray Affair, and their
participation at our booth.  It was a fun weekend for most of us.  =
President
Leo Phillips opened the meeting; Ron Backer gave a lovely poem for the
invocation.  Sam Altdoerffer, accompanied by Bruce Williams (so glad =
you=92re
back) led the singing.  Sam has such a nice singing voice, he even made =
us
sound good last week, in Bruce=92s absence.

Bruce Wenzel made a few comments about the Delray Affair, and how he
participated, along with the founder of the event, John C. Bordeman, in
1965, to start the event.  Wow!  I think even Bruce had no idea how =
large it
would grow.  This year, we had about 250,000 attendees.  Bruce then =
welcomed
about four visiting Rotarians.  Nick Loeb had as his guests Anna =
Peterson
(his fianc=E9e), Lori Durante and Nicole Flier.  They were here to =
promote the
upcoming fundraiser for The Museum of Lifestyle and Fashion History.
Invitations were handed out; deadline for reservations is Thursday.

Make ups were done by Nick Loeb and Sylvia Pecaro.  Fred Bonardi gave us =
a
=93not so good=94 stock report for today; but, the market is up for the =
year.

Sergeant at Arms Ernie Simon gave the report of earnings for our club =
today.
Dave O=92Connell, feeling so badly that he didn=92t get to help at the =
Delray
Affair, donated $50.00.  Georgina Rice gave $10.00, due to her absence =
from
meetings.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:  THURSDAY, APRIL 27, 5:00 TO 7:00 PM. Dr. Gay Vela gave =
all
of us a personal invitation to attend the upcoming =93Membership =
Mixer=94 being
held at her =93Wright By The Sea.=94  She told us catering will be by =
=93Try
Thai.=94  The event will be held in her tike hut, by the ocean.  Of =
course,
this means a casual event; lots of good food and camaraderie; so bring =
your
significant other; a friend; a PROSPECT for Rotary.  (Wright By The Sea =
is
located just south of the Linton Bridge, on A1A, 1901 S. Ocean Blvd.

DIGITAL CAMERA WORKSHOP =96 May 20, 9-1 PM, The Palm Beach Photographic
Centre, 55 NE 2nd Avenue, Delray Beach.  100% of all proceeds are =
donated to
Rotary Club of Delray Beach Scholarship Fund; compliments of Art and =
Fatima
NeJame.  This workshop is open to the public; price $50.00.

ROTARY UNIVERSITY =96 Indian River Community College =96 April 29, 8:30 =
am.  All
officers are encouraged to attend.

Mark Denkler, of the Scholarship Committee announced the committee will =
meet
next week.  If you know a deserving senior at Atlantic High School who =
would
be eligible for a scholarship, please contact Mark, immediately.

Dave Armstrong, we thank you for heading the committee for the Delray
Affair.  Steve Bates, we thank you and your family for breaking down and
storing our equipment.  Bill Arnst, we thank you for getting the booth =
ready
on Friday.  The rest of the numerous workers, we thank each of you.

Our guest speaker today was Larry Labadie, District Governor District =
6930,
for 2006-2007.  He grew up in Michigan.  He lives in Vero Beach; owns a
family-run business; Central Window of Vero Beach, which employees over
fifty people.  He has been a Rotarian since 1983, and served as Club
President of Rotary Club of Vero Beach Sunrise in 1993-94.  He is a
multi-Paul Harris Fellow, a member of the District Paul Harris Society =
and a
TRF major donor.  Larry has chaired or co-chaired the Vero Beach =
Homestay
Committee for ten years and has enjoyed the international benefits of =
the
Rotary House Exchange Fellowship (France) and the Rotary Hosting =
Fellowship
(England and New Zealand).

Larry and his wife Maureen, who is a Paul Harris Fellow, strongly =
believe in
the Rotary ideals and hope to further its Service endeavors both here =
and
abroad.  Larry is a smiling, personable man, who strongly believes in =
the
four way test!  He is looking forward to his year as District Governor.

NEXT WEEK:  We have been promised a good speaker, by the FAU speaker =
pool.
Things changed a bit recently, since our original speaker from FAU is no
longer available.
