      ROTARY RAMBLINGS

ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

May 2, 2006

 

President Leo Phillips presided over yet another fantastic meeting on this
lovely May day.  The weather is so beautiful; looks like the snowbirds went
home way too soon.  Harvey Brown gave a very moving, from the heart,
invocation.  Sam Altdoerffer led the singing. We were entertained, prior to
the meeting, by our own professional "music man," Bruce Williams.  

We sang Happy Birthday to Cliff Ripley, who generously donated $80.00 (to
hear us sing?).  Also, Sam Altoderffer and Jim Pignato are celebrating their
wedding anniversaries, along with their "brides;" Sam donated $57.00, and
Jim donated $60.00, commemorating the years of marriage.

Tom Stanley did a terrific job, welcoming our visiting Rotarians.  Nick Loeb
did a make up; thanks Nick.  Georgina Rice gave an optimistic stock report.

Sergeant at Arms Roy Simon gathered in a total of $348.00; wow!

Our club wishes to thank Dr. Gay Vela for sharing her lovely Wright By The
Sea Resort.  Everyone in attendance enjoyed the tiki hut; the ocean breeze;
the Thai food, and most of all, the ambience.  Again, Gay, you are a
gracious hostess; thank you.

Art NeJame reminded us of the upcoming fundraiser for our club; the Digital
Camera Workshop.  MAY 20; 9:00 to l:00 pm.  This is being held at the Palm
Beach Photo Centre; compliments of Art and Fatima NeJame.  Price for
workshop is $50.00; all proceeds go to our Rotary Club.  This is open to the
public; tell your photo enthusiasts about it.

Anne Bright is ordering more of the "Rotary Shirts."  If you did not get
one, please see Anne.  The price is $40.00; nice Pima cotton shirts.

Dave Armstrong thanked all for help during Delray Affair.  He sold all the
leftover supplies; most to be donated to CCCC.

Today, we were honored to have the "brand new" head coach at FAU, as our
speaker, Rex Walters.  Mr. Walters has been a professional athlete for many
years before going into coaching.  He has quite a resume, coming from
Kansas; seven years in NBA.  He played for the Heat for three years.  He
became Associate Head Coach at FAU last year.  Thus, he stepped into head
coach position, after former head coach Matt Doherty, took a position
elsewhere.  Rex gave us his "game plan" for building a strong team.  His
team is number 18 in the Sunbelt League.  His philosophy is: "don't worry
about the destination, enjoy the journey."
