ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
May 9, 2006
This morning started with nineteen dedicated Rotarians from our club,
attending our monthly board of directors meeting. This meeting is held the
second Tuesday of each month, at 7:30 a.m., in the Marilyn Room, at Ellie's
Diner. We encourage all members to attend, and be a part of what we are
trying to do for our club, and those around us. Con Fecher proposed the
purchase of a popcorn popper for use in next year's Delray Affair (and all
other suitable events). The board decided to make this possible, providing
we collect, by next February, enough revenue for the purchase. It is a fact
that we need new ideas of raising funds; what is YOUR input? Also, Bob
Erickson is still working on the riwiki.org. Project, (for Rotary to stamp
out illiteracy).
President Leo Phillips led both the a.m., and noon meetings. Dave O'Connell
gave the invocation; Steve Rich led the singing. Of course, as always, Bruce
Williams entertained us, as we entered the room. He sure knows how to put
us in a light-hearted mood. We also sang Happy Birthday to four of our
members; George Kientzy, donating $60.00; Dave O'Connell donating $72.00;
Dave Armstrong donating $60.00 (for some reason) and Ernie Simon donating
$81.00. This cannot possibly be their ages, but they were very generous,
anyway.
Nick Loeb, in his campaign style, warmly welcomed our visiting Rotarians and
guests. We had three prospective members in attendance (wow!). Gerry Meeks
and Sylvia Pecaro did make ups (we refrain from stating how). Inga Talmon
finally returned from her adventures to Hollywood, and beyond.
Georgina Rice eloquently gave the stock market report. At that moment, the
Dow was up 20 points; S&P up 1 point; NASDAQ down three points. The price
of gold is out of sight, at $691.00 per ounce (mine is tucked away in the
ground, in my fruit jar).
As our Sergeant at Arms stated: "we collected a record amount of money
today; $421.00!" $100.00 of this was donated by Con Fecher, to "pop off" our
popcorn project, as he sang his swan song, until next season. Con, enjoy
the mountains this summer.
Art NeJame is still making photos for our club directory. If you haven't
had your picture made, please do so by next week. We will put your
information in the booklet without your picture, if you don't act promptly.
It's always nice for the new members to be able to put a face with a name.
You won't be too impressive, if you are just a "blank" above your name.
ANNOUNCEMENTS - May 20, Digital Photography Workshop - Palm Beach Photo
Centre/Museum. Art and Fatima NeJame are offering this wonderful workshop;
all proceeds to go to our club! Just to take a walk through their museum is
a treat; give it a try.
More "Rotary Shirts" are on order, per Anne Bright. If you want one, or
another one, please see her.
Miracle League Reception on May 17, 5:30-7:30, at Boston's on the Beach.
There is no charge, but they are looking for donations, of all
denominations. This is your opportunity to help make the Miracle League
Park a reality for the handicapped kids in our community. See Kurt Godfrey,
regarding this event.
I went to the new Delray Beach Library to check on our recognition plaque,
for our $5,000 donation to the library. The "Rotary Reading Room" is
located on the second floor, to the right of the stairs. It is highly
visible, for the world to see. The plaque is delivered; should be
"installed" this week. Dave O'Connell is checking on our club donating a
"Freedom Shrine." A Rotary Project, to be purchased and installed, also.
Today, our guest speaker was Ed Rowen, Team Leader of District 6930 Group
Study Exchange to Mumbai, India. What a wonderful experience.
I was able to understand Ed's "dialect" very well, since he and I grew up in
the "same neck of the woods," in beautiful East Tennessee, in the foothills
of the Great Smoky Mountains. (Yankees call his hometown Maryville, natives
call it Muryvull.) He is of Scot-Irish heritage; Rowen meaning red; from
the Rowen tree berries. He moved to Florida in 1981. He is a CPA, and a
dedicated Rotarian. He joined the Boca Raton Sunrise Rotary Club in 1995.
He has served on various committees within the club; started their annual
Family Bicycling Event; established the Boca Raton Sunrise Foundation in
1997. He became President in 2000-2001. He has served as Assistant Governor
of District 6930, repeatedly; he has worked on the GSE Committee for five
years. He will be our District GSE Coordinator for 2006-2007.
Ed made a power point presentation of his wonderful visit to Mumbai, India,
along with four other members of the GSE Team. In each picture, his face
showed that he really was happy to share life and his customs with the
people of India. It was unbelievable to see the streets and the unorganized
traffic, coming from all directions; they looked like our Delray Affair, on
a regular day. There are more than 14 million people in that city. Most of
the people of that area are Hindu; a religion that is very tolerant of other
religions. He stated the people had strong family ties. As you recall, we
had the GSE Team from India as our guests, a few weeks ago. What a
wonderful bond, worldwide, that Rotary makes possible for all of us.
On Wednesday, May 17, at 7:00 P.M., our club will be presenting, along with
others, our scholarships to the graduating recipients of our Rotary Club of
Delray Beach Scholarships. We will be giving away ten scholarships at this
time, at the new Atlantic High School Auditorium. This is another landmark
event.
Next Week: Our speaker will be Sue Miller, Director of the Crossroads Club.
She will conduct a tour of the new facility, following the meeting. If she
looks familiar to you, she should; she is one of our hard working Rotary
members.
I will be unable to attend next week's meeting, since I have been "tapped
for jury duty." Who will volunteer to do The Ramblings? You may reach me
at Elliesecondtime@bellsouth.net.
