ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
May 23, 2006
In the absence of our president, President-elect Dave Armstrong presided
over our meeting. Attendance was lighter, indicating the snowbirds have
taken flight. Rev. Roger Richardson gave the invocation, offering a
powerful prayer. Jimmy Weatherspoon, in his usual jovial mood, led the
singing. Of course, as we entered the room, we were greeted by the
beautiful sounds of Bruce Williams' music.
Bruce Wenzel greeted four visiting Rotarians; Mickey Manning gave the
banner. We had Stephanie Seibel, from the CCCC as a guest of Anne Bright
today. We sang Happy Anniversary to Steve Bates, who is celebrating his
first anniversary with his lovely bride, Peggy Lynn. Congratulations to
you, Steve and Peggy. Tom Stanley did make ups online.
Ernie Simon, our Sergeant at Arms, gathered in a total of $87.00 today.
Seems we are really working on that popcorn machine!
One of our nine recent scholarship recipients was in attendance today, to
thank us for the scholarship. He is Michael Del Fiandra, a good looking,
bright young man, who is also an accomplished equestrian. He hopes to
compete in the Olympics someday, as well as receive his education.
Our guest speaker today was an enthusiastic speaker by the name of Brent
Winans. He spoke on "The Most Bang For Our Buck - Why We Should All Care
About Early Childhood Development."
Mr. Winans, a very personable man, greeted each member at the door, prior to
the meeting, handing out flyers on his subject.
He gave us some pretty startling facts about how we are failing our kids,
thus creating a society of incarcerated adults. He told us, assuming the
validity of the estimate, that 20% of the population of the U. S. will at
some point in their lives be imprisoned, it will cost $100,000 a year for
one year each, which totals to $5,900,000,000,000. (That's trillion!) The
cost of the criminal justice system is three times the cost of the nation's
entire health care budget.
What to do? Recent studies have shown conclusively that the roots of
violence are in the nursery. Science is beginning to understand how the
human brain develops. The first l, 000 days of life - from conception to
age two, are critical to connecting to society.
Home visitation programs that teach prospective and new parents how to deal
with challenges of pregnancy and early childhood have proven to be effective
in curbing violence in later years. Excellent daycare programs can also be
effective; such as The Community Child Care Center of Delray; Healthy
Mothers Healthy Babies of Palm Beach County, Delray Beach, and The center
for Family Services, WPB.

"Ghosts From the Nursery - Tracing the Roots of Violence," by Robin
