ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
June 6, 2006
President Leo Philips presided over our meeting today, opening it with =
an
invocation by Jim Pignato. Jimmy Weatherspoon, accompanied by Bruce
Williams led us in song. =20
We celebrated Steve Bates=92 birthday, by singing to him. He generously
donated $52.00. Thank you, Steve. Also, the club unanimously voted to =
have
Steve Bates serve as Secretary of our club, for the upcoming year. This =
is
due to the fact that John Callahan, the elected secretary, is no longer
available to serve. Installation of new officers will take place on =
June
27, 2006, at Ellie=92s Flamingo Room; please be in attendance, to =
support our
new board.
Art NeJame did a fine job of welcoming the visitors, Rotarians and =
friends
alike. Kurt Godfrey presented and accepted a banner to Sheryl Santos, =
of
Lubbock, TX.
Fred Bonardi had no good news from the stock market; seems it was down,
down, down. He did however, do a good job collecting $127.00 for the =
club.
ANNOUNCEMENT: Rotary International District 6930 will hold its 2005-2006
Awards Luncheon, and installation of 2006-07 District Governor Larry
Labadie, on June 25, 2006. This will be held at Palm Beach Gardens =
Marriott;
noon to 3:30 p.m. The price is $15.00/pp. payable to Rotary District =
6930.
All reservations and payment required by June 15, 2006. Please send =
this to
Shirley Hirsch 7078 San Salvador, Boca Raton, FL 33433. =20
Our speaker was Ezra M. Krieg, Director of Special Projects, Kids In
Distress. This sincerely dedicated man has a long line of honors for =
his
humane acts. =20
He spoke on how the organization Kids In Distress operates. Their =
mission
statement is: =93We are a nationally accredited agency dedicated to the
prevention of child abuse, the preservation of the family and the care =
and
treatment of abused and neglected children.=94
In the 70=92s they started buying up duplexes, to house 7-8 children in =
each.
Today they have a campus, housing approximately 100 children, which is
located in Broward County. They do have a Delray Beach office now, =
located
at Congress and Lake Ida Roads; dealing with the local area children, =
and
their families.=20
This organization has taken over, and effectively operate, where the
government agency could not. Private dollars work better than =
government
dollars. Statistics show that 30% of these children return home; 70% =
remain
a ward of the state. KID does an ongoing monitoring of the foster =
homes.
Last year, there were 44 adoptions. =20
Mr. Kreig started his speech, by carrying a black plastic bag in his =
hand,
the symbol of what law enforcement hands to a child, to pack, when they =
are
to be leaving an abusive, unsafe home; possibly forever. Children =
deserve a
better life than these abusive, neglected situations. It is the =
nation=92s
leading cause of death for children under three. =20
KID operates 24 hours daily, 365 days a year, providing essential care =
for
more than 6,000 children. The state provides 9 =BD million of a 15 =
million
budget. The rest is private funding. They seek the support of clubs =
such
as ours. For more information: Kids In Distress, Inc., 601 N. Congress
Ave., Suite 413, Delray Beach, FL 33445, 561-272-9619, or
www.kidsindistress.org <http://www.kidsindistress.org/> .
Next week: Bob Erickson, speaking on =93R. I. Wickie.=94 If you are =
curious
about this title, please come and hear Bob. He has worked diligently to
implement this program.
