ROTARY RAMBLINGS
The meeting was called to order by Leo - the last week before the
installation of the new officers.
Invocation was given by Hack Allen and Jimmy Weatherspoon led us on a
wonderful rendition of "Home on the Range" in honor of his return from
vacation (there's no place like home) and our age old favorite "Smile".
Bruce Wentzel issued his always appreciated greetings to the one visiting
Rotarian and a few guests including Mike Campbell of Habitat for Humanity (a
past Rotarian possibly looking to join us), Stephanie and Camille from the
Community Childcare Center and 2 more of our scholarship recipients. Our
small but lively group acknowledged Bruce for doing his usual excellent
greetings. There was no stock report and Roy Simons, as Sargeant at Arms
raised $108 - which was not too shabby considering no birthdays or
anniversaries. Our own Nick Loeb announced his latest venture a non-profit
organization H.E.L.P. Delray started to help Delray residents get educate
and assist Delray residents with home ownership, business development and
debit management thru workshops and outreach programs. He is assisted by a
couple of other Rotarians (Tom Stanley and Bill Morse) who are on the Board
of Directors of this recently formed organization.
Our newest Rotarian, Bob Teninga, was inducted today - let's put him to
work.
Bruce Williams was finally present to receive acknowledgment from our club.
Bill Adams put together a visual presentation of the pictures from the Palm
Beach Post article about our own piano man. He changed the name to
"Everlasting Song" since we expect to keep him around for a while. Bruce
told us a little about his background and how his playing has kept him sane
all these years. It really was great for our members to finally get to
applaud Bruce (with him there to hear it) for his very important
contribution to our club. The two things visitors remember about our Club
is the food and - the music! Thanks Bruce!!
Announcements:
District luncheon - this coming Sunday, 6/26 - 12-3 - PGA Marriott - a
number of folks from our club are attending, and today, Tuesday was the last
day to sign up.
Next week, Tuesday, June 6/28, will be the installation of the new officers
- please plan to attend.
Steve Bates introduced two of our scholarship receipients: Jessica Crowell
and Dylan Tidwell (both of whom are not strangers to our club). Jessica was
recently a visitor at our club upon her return from Japan with the sister
city student visitors. She is attending FAU and is not sure what she plans
to major in, but hopes to do something with computers. Dylan (along with
his Mom) gave a talk on homeschooling. He is attending Florida State in the
honors program and will be majoring in biology. Way to go Jessica and
Dylan!
Dave Armstrong announced that Rotary Club is sponsoring and assisting the
Community Childcare Center with its annual fundraiser again this year. The
date is November 18th, and we are not helping with the day-to-day planning,
but are committed to help with sponsorship in the form of cash fundraising
and in-kind donations, such as food, liquor, equipment rentals, printing,
etc. The in-kind donations do not have to be free, they can also be in the
form of discounts for said goods and services. If you can help with either
of these types of sponsorship (we are all supposed to have some contacts or
friends or know someone who might participate), talk to Dave.
Bob Erikson discussed his latest project - Reading International - He is
going to educate the planet, single-handedly (so far). If you stretched
all the discarded computers, they would reach from San Francisco to Boston.
There are so many ways the world can be internet connected -1) solar panels
at a cost of only $2,000 can power a whole village's phones and internet
access connecting otherwise desolate areas with the power of the internet
and the ability to research and source information, marketing sources, etc.
and 2) a laptop computer that is powered by cranking it - cost $100. No
hardware involved. Imagine how little it would cost to provide computers to
the children in villages throughout the third world, so they too could be
educated and connected to the rest of the civilized world. Bob's
contribution - he has started a website - free of charge - where anyone can
access lessons that anyone else wanted to post. So as a teacher teaches a
topic to a class in Delray Beach, they can post it to Bob's website and
anyone anywhere can utilize it to learn or teach the same topic anywhere in
the world. Go Bob! One last comment from Bob, wikihow.com - website -
where anyone can post how to do anything and if you are registered, you can
update and correct other people's posting.
No one won the greenhat which was $351.
Respectfully submitted,
Sue Miller - look for Ellie next week?
