ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

July 18, 2006

Today, President David Armstrong held his first official Board of Directors
meeting, doing a good job, looking very official in his "Rotary tie."  (Past
President Leo Phillips, sat with a smile on his face, and a sigh of relief.)
Bill Morse, Accountant, did a fine job presenting a financial statement to
the board.  President Armstrong is looking for chairpersons for various
categories.  Please see him, and get involved.  We sure missed seeing Ernie
Simon at the meeting, and at our regular meeting.  Ernie, we wish you a
speedy recovery; hurry back.

We have a few people requesting summer "leave of absence."  Please present a
written request to Sally Dye, if you wish to do this.  A request was
recently made by Ray Ripley, for the summer.  Also, please do "make ups" if
you must be absent, thus keeping our club among the top clubs in attendance.

At noon, President Armstrong held his first official Rotary meeting for the
year 2006-2007, doing a fine job, as well.  By the way, I have had numerous
compliments for last week's "stand-in," Vice President Shirley Clark.

Dave O'Connell gave our invocation.  Jimmy Weatherspoon, we welcome you
back, to lead our singing.  You always put so much enthusiasm into it.
Bruce Williams, we thank you for your great music, especially your Cole
Porter renditions.  Each week, you are given kudos, but you are always
"skipped out."  We love you, and appreciate your fine musical touch to our
meetings.

Harvey Brown did a fine job of welcoming all our visiting Rotarians and
guests.  He also mentioned that Sylvia Pecaro recently attended her 30 year
high school class reunion, winning top award, for "Ms. Forever Young."  Of
course, he let everyone know that he had just heard this, that he is not
that old!  Make ups were done by Bob Erickson and Sylvia Pecaro.  

The stock market report was given by Mrs. Georgina Rice, stating the Dow was
down; the NASDAQ was down; the S&P was down.  Georgina, that's Fred's line,
not yours; what happened?

Today, we had a team of dignitaries from Bethesda Hospital.  They were Lisa
Kronhaus, Director of Relations, for seven years, and Geralyn Lunsford, V.
P. Patient Services.  They, in turn, introduced the distinguished Louis
Snyder, M.D., FACC, and the new Director of Bethesda Heart Institute.  Dr.
Snyder received training at John Hopkins, and Harvard Medical schools.  He
now has a private practice in Delray Beach, at Linton Blvd. and Military
Trail.  He is very personable, and very approachable, with a winning smile.

Groundbreaking for this heart institute took place in January.  It has been
slated to open in the fall of 2007, giving us community sponsored care.  It
will have 39 beds, all in private rooms.  The artists' rendition looks like
a hotel suite, rather than a hospital room.  There will be two dedicated
cardio operating rooms, using twenty-first century, state of the art
equipment. As of this date, they have raised 85 million, of the needed 100
million to complete this facility.  

Dr. Snyder showed us slides of a Multi-slice CT Scanner, which he has
available, and uses in his office.  The scanner "slices" through, first the
clothing, the skin, the skeleton, to expose any plaque filled arteries.
This is done in a matter of seconds!  He specializes in cleaning out the
artery, and placing stents (a spring like apparatus) that holds the artery
wide open.  He told us we have ten miles of blood vessels, and one system.
(A good idea to keep it flowing properly.)  

There are two other hospitals in the area with cardiovascular services; both
are "chain facilities," (meaning for stockholder profit).  This facility is
community owned, thus applying profits to the care of patients.  Dr. Snyder
stated that the lowest mortality rate is at a non-profit hospital.  (Food
for thought!)

We hope to have this team to visit us again, in the next few months, to give
us an update on the progress of this facility.  (Dr. Snyder, I will see to
it that you receive a Rotary song book next time, since that was your wish.)
I find this very exciting, and comforting to know we live in an area, with a
fine hospital such as Bethesda, with all of its facilities.

This is the second publication for membership for Kay Johnson, Head of St.
Joseph School.  She will be interviewed, and presented to the club in the
next few weeks.

Next Week: Our speaker will be Mike Keough, of the Boy Scouts.
