ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

August 1, 2006

President Dave Armstrong presided over our meeting today.  Gerry Meeks gave
a moving invocation.  Jimmy Weatherspoon, accompanied by "Mr. Piano Man,"
Bruce Williams, got us off to a good start!  Did anyone notice that Bruce
was playing "Let it Snow, Let it Snow," on such a hot day?  In his own way,
he was keeping "cool."  

Bruce Wenzel welcomed our visiting Rotarians; among them was Mike Alfele,
President of Rotary Club of Lake Worth.  He had as his guest, Janet Powell,
of Riverside Bank; a prospective member of our club. Bruce noted that Dave
Richards was celebrating his birthday, and donating $54.00 to the club.  He
sure deserves a "Happy Birthday Song."  Lyn Huckle did her make ups. Bruce
also mentioned the 49th Anniversary of Mercer-Wenzel Department Store.  As
all of you know, that store is the cornerstone of E. Atlantic and N. E.
Fourth Avenues.  Congratulations, Bruce! 

Fred Bonardi gave a stock market report, stating the market is not up, YET!
He stated the "Fed" meets next week, which determines the rates.  Fred, also
Sergeant at Arms, gathered in a whopping $195.00 today.  Of course this
included Lyn Huckle's generous contribution of $50.00; her apology for being
away so long; Dave Richards $54.00 for his birthday; and Shane Moore gave
$10.00 for his mom's birthday.  (This may start a trend, huh?)

President David Armstrong had the pleasure of inducting our first new
member, under his leadership, Kay Johnson, Head of St. Joseph School.  Kay
has expressed her desire to "get in there and help on committees."  Kay, we
have a list; welcome to the club!

ANNOUNCEMENT:  Bob Erickson has informed us that our Rotary Club of Delray
Beach website is up and running.  Maybe he will tell us more about it.

Our Board of Directors meeting will be held next Tuesday, 7:30 a. m. at
Ellie's Marilyn Room (adjacent to the diner; across the hall from the
Flamingo Room.)  President Armstrong has given the invitation for all
members to attend, since many good things are happening.  Dave Richards will
tell us about an International Project in Honduras, at that time.  

Service Above Self Award will be held Tuesday, November 21, 2006, at Old
School Square.  The time will be 11:30 a. m. for ceremony, and lunch at
noon, in the gym.  Please mark your calendar for this yearly event.

Our guest speaker today was a good friend of mine, and the founder of Dare
to Dream Children's Foundation, of Dallas, Texas, Ms. Jan Tennyson.  Ms.
Tennyson is a dynamic speaker, and holds the attention of her audience, as
she tells her compelling story, of struggle as a child, growing up in the
unstable foster care system in New York City.  This, however, is the
catalyst that ignited a passion to create Dare to Dream Children's
Foundation.  This faith-based ministry has provided hands-on programs to
rescue more than 17,000 troubled teens since 1987.

Jan speaks nationally and internationally as the "Voice of the Children."
She has been interviewed on radio and television; been featured in newspaper
and magazine articles.  She is in the South Florida area, this visit, as
keynote speaker for a religious school and church.  

I've had the pleasure of viewing her pictures of a visit to an orphanage in
Russia.  She noted the importance of having an American flag at all these
meetings, allowing the world to recognize the love and compassion we hold as
brothers and sisters; creations of God.
