ROTARY RAMBLINGS

ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

August 8, 2006

The Board of Directors met at 7:30 a. m. Tuesday, led by President Dave
Armstrong, in the Marilyn Room, Ellie's Diner.  Many things were
accomplished.  Among them: Bill Morse, of Delray Accounting and Tax
Services, Inc. and a member of our club, gave a detailed financial statement
for Rotary Club of Delray Beach, for the period ending June 30, 2006.  I
wish to convey our thanks, on behalf of our club, to Bill.  

At noon, President Armstrong again picked up his gavel, to preside over our
regular noon meeting. Hack Allen gave the invocation; Jimmy Weatherspoon led
the singing.  Bruce Williams helped us over a hurdle or two, making the
singing sound a bit better; then, we sang "Smile."

We had birthdays and anniversaries "all mixed together."  I think Lew
Currier was celebrating his 39th birthday, by giving $44.00; Hack and Gloria
Allen are celebrating 59 years together; he gave $59.00; Mickey and Sharon
Manning are celebrating 28 years; he gave $28.00.  We congratulate each of
you, and wish you the best; especially Lew, who doesn't really know how old
he is! 

Joyce Lunsford had a guest from Tennessee.  We also had Ms. Blackwell, from
D. C. back with us.  We had "oodles" of make ups from Tom Cook and Stormi
Norem.  Fred Bonardi gave a much more pleasant stock report than usual.  The
market was up!  The Feds did not raise the interest rate!

Ernie Simon, Sergeant at Arms, gathered in $225.00 today; much of it coming
from our members celebrating special events.  Lyn Huckle donated $20.00
toward the popcorn popper. Things are popping, guys!  We're getting there!
Bob Teninga paid for a banner he did not give away. I have been asked to
remind those of us who have not paid our dues-----Dues are Due!

ANNOUNCEMENTS:  

On August 22, our 6930 District Governor, Larry Labadie will be holding a
Board Meeting at 11:00 a. m., at Ellie's Diner, before he speaks at our noon
meeting.  Anyone wishing to come and personally get to know Larry may attend
the 11:00 a.m. meeting, prior to the noon meeting.

September 23, will be the Eighth Annual Scholastic Achievement Foundation of
Palm Beach County, Golf Tournament, at Quail Ridge.  Our club is looking for
participants for this event.  As most of you know, this foundation was
founded by our own member and educator, Cliff Ripley.

November 18, will be our annual fundraiser, benefiting the Community Child
Care Center.  It's in the planning stages, and looking for volunteers; more
information to follow.

November 21, Service Above Self Award, at Old School Square.  Ernie Simon,
Chairperson, and his committee, consisting of Dave O'Connell and Nancy
Owens, have worked diligently to find a worthy recipient.  Ernie will
announce their conclusion next week at our noon meeting; be there.

We had the pleasure of meeting one of our bright scholarship recipients,
Mark Borque, along with his father.  Mark will be attending University of
Miami, studying Architecture.  Mark thanked the club for our scholarship.
We thank you for coming and meeting our club members; we wish you the very
best.

I would like to thank Dave O'Connell, for gathering the information; Art
NeJame (PB Photo) for making photos, and Kurt Godfrey, our printer (Bob's
Printing), for putting together our updated Rotary Club of Delray Beach
Directory.  This was a big undertaking, especially when they had to "drag"
information from some of the people.  By the way, I picked up someone's
"left behind" directory, after the meeting.  

Our guest speaker was Nick Loeb, with episode 2, of his produced, and shown
on PBS, documentary, entitled Living Century.  This episode was narrated by
Walter Cronkite, and featured Robert St. John, 100 years old, born in
Chicago, in 1902.  That's where our problem began; the projector "broke
down," leaving Nick without his story!  This was a good indication that our
club is in dire need of our own projector.  When this happened, Kurt Godfrey
promised we will have one next week.  Lyn Huckle stated she will donate
$350.00 toward it; Bob Teninga pledged $100.00; Bill Arnst pledged $100.00;
Tom Cook pledged $100; Dave Armstrong pledge $50.00; Bill Morse pledged
$50.00.  Kurt, it looks like we will have money for a projector; so, go for
it!  (If I missed anyone, or misquoted, please let me know.)  

Nick, we are looking forward to Episode #2, of your Hollywood produced
documentary, Living Century.  I hope you can schedule it again real soon.
