ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

September 12, 2006

President David Armstrong started his day with presiding over our monthly
Board of Directors meeting at 7:30 a. m. in the Marilyn Room of Ellie's
Diner.  There was much discussion of our finances; Bill Morse was there to
answer all these questions.  We must commend Bill for all the volunteer work
he does for our club, keeping our funds in order.  Members, please try to
attend at least one of these meetings; you will see that our club is in good
hands.

President Armstrong presided over the noon meeting as well.  Our attendance
is fairly good for this time of year; just wait!  Candace Etzler gave the
invocation.  She is also celebrating her "29th birthday."  She donated
$29.00 to the club; thanks.

Harvey Brown, in his adlibbing style, welcomed visiting Rotarians, Shane
Moore and Jeff Dennis.  Eric Meyer did a make up.  We also had Betsy Owen
with us.  Bob Teninga had his parents visiting with us today; welcome to
all. 

Georgina Rice gave an upbeat market report.

Sergeant at Arms Tony Allerton, (welcome back) gathered in a total of
$136.00 today.  He announced that we have over $800.00 in our "popcorn
account."  

ATTENTION ALL GOLFERS: President Armstrong announced that Cliff Ripley is
donating his foursome (since he cannot be here) for the Annual Golf
Tournament for the Scholastic Scholarship Foundation.  President Armstrong
announced this will be auctioned off next week.  

Nancy Owens has consented to head up our "Dictionary Project" again this
year.  She will be looking for a committee; be prepared to enjoy a rewarding
event.

Ernie Simon gave us a brief description of our 10th annual recipient of the
Service Above Self Award.  He is Bob Miller, owner of Bob Miller State Farm
Agency.  More information on Mr. Miller to follow. This event will be held
on November 21, 11:30 a. m., on the front walkway of Old School Square.
This is a very prestigious event for our club each year; please be in
attendance.  Lunch will be served in the old gym following the ceremony.

Stephanie Seibel, Director of Development at Community Child Care Center
Foundation had the pleasure of introducing her employer, Nancy Hurd, Founder
of this fine organization.  She started this center in a church classroom in
1969.  The current facility is on Lake Ida Road, about one half mile west of
Swinton Avenue.  They care for 700+ children (and their families), 12 months
to 18 years of age, daily.  Since they now partner with Village Academy,
with the Beacon Center, for after school children, they will be changing
their name in November; to be announced at our big fundraiser event.  We
will be partnering with them for this "Celebrate Good Times Benefit."  This
will be held on Saturday, November 18, to be held in a private mansion on
the ocean in Delray Beach; invitations will be forthcoming.  We are
expecting around 300 guests, consisting of Rotary members, corporate
sponsors, etc.  

As most of you know, they work with mostly minority, one parent, and
abandoned, abused children.  These children are seven times more likely to
be victims.  We live in a county that ranks number three wealthiest county
in the country, yet this problem exists; we must be willing to help those in
need.

Next Week: Our speaker will be Bob Stave.  Mr. Stave is a retired military
man; a Viet Nam veteran that is doing his part to help the orphan children
victims in that war torn area.
