ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

President-elect Kurt Godfrey led our meeting again this week, in the absence
of our president, Dave Armstrong, who is enjoying a few days vacation.
Steve Bates gave a very meaningful invocation. As always, Jimmy
Weatherspoon, with his happy attitude, led us in "joyful song." Let's not
forget the lovely music that greets us each week, as we enter the room; none
other than Bruce Williams on piano.
As Harvey Brown entered the room, he spotted his predecessor, Bruce Wenzel,
greeting our visitors (good timing, Harvey). Shane Moore was visiting us
again. Dr. Tanya Hlinka, a local chiropractor, was my guest today, and is
also a prospective member. It was good to see Dr. Gay Vela back with us;
also, Dave Richards, who has been in Honduras, regarding the water wells for
the local Hondurans. He will be our speaker soon, telling us of his
findings.
Nancy Owens told us of her fun day last Saturday, playing golf with her son
and his friends, at the Scholastic Scholarship Foundation Tournament.
Thanks again to Cliff Ripley, for making it possible.
Georgina Rice had good news regarding the stock market, it was up today. It
was the highest since 2000. How will it look next week, when Fred Bonardi
reports?
A special thank you was given to Bob Teninga for all the work he is doing
for our club. This young man has jumped in to volunteer to help with many
projects.
A special thank you goes to Shirley Clark; she has procured $1,000.00 gift
check from her bank, Fidelity Federal, for the upcoming fundraiser event for
the Community Child Care Center.
Sergeant at Arms Tony Allerton, who was celebrating his birthday, donated
$50.00; he collected $151.00 for the popcorn popper today. His grand total
was $238.00 for the day. Happy birthday Tony!
Our guest speaker was Peter Carney, Tax Collector for Palm Beach County. On
April 26, 2006, he as appointed by the Governor to serve as PB County Tax
Collector, due to the vacancy created by the retirement of John Clark.
Mr. Carney is a native of South Florida. He is a graduate of Princeton
University, with a degree in Economics, a law degree from Boston College,
and a Masters in Banking Law, from Boston University School of Law.
His immediate past employment was working as an attorney in Delray Beach,
specializing in the areas of real estate, corporate and land use/zoning law.
He has served on many local boards, and resides in Delray Beach with his
family.
Mr. Carney emphasized that he is not the tax assessor; he sends out the tax
notices. He gave us the calendar of when taxes are due, and all the kinds
of taxes and licenses under his jurisdiction. His office is a
Constitutional Office, fully independent of local authority. His office
collects and disburses over $2.6 billion in taxes and fees each year, on
behalf of 93 tax levying authorities.
He was asked about his view point of difference between him and his
opponent, for the upcoming November election, for his office. He gave a
very diplomatic answer.

licenses, etc you may need. You may even pay your property taxes online.
