ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

October 3, 2006

President Dave Armstrong was back today, from a trek around the Globe, it
seems like.  He looked rested and raring to lead us!  I hear that
President-elect Kurt Godfrey had a pleasant trip out to the Midwest this
past week.  President Armstrong thanked Kurt for conducting the meetings for
the last two weeks; we thank you also.  (Good training.)

As always, the room was filled with beautiful music as we entered, thanks to
Bruce Williams.  Dave Harden gave a lovely invocation, from the heart.
Jimmy Weatherspoon made us all happy, with leading the singing.  

Leo and Pat Phillips are celebrating 23 years of marital bliss.  He donated
$23.00 in honor of their anniversary; the best to both of you.

Harvey Brown introduced our one visiting Rotarian, Shane Moore.  Mark
Denkler did make ups while on his vacation (wonder if the rest of them
did...hummm.)  Georgina Rice had her handsome son, Jerome, visiting with her
from London.  Either she looks too young, or he looks too old for them to be
mother and son!

Fred Bonardi, you have finally "hit the jackpot" with giving the stock
market report; congratulations.  At noon, the DOW was up 75 points, at
11,748; it closed at 11,727.  At noon, the NASDAQ was up 11 points and the
S&P was up 5 points.  This was attributed to oil prices falling; gold prices
falling, and the interest rate falling.  I'm sure there are lots of happy
people tonight.

Ernie Simon, Sergeant at Arms, gathered in a total of $114.00 today.  Sue
Miller donated money for the banner. Bill Arnst, Lynn Huckle and Leo
Phillips, rooting for "Big Blue," donated $10.00 and $5.00 respectively.
(They needed Rich Connell to join them.)  Ernie also reminded us of the
Service Above Self Awards ceremony, slated for November 21, 11:30 a. m., at
Old School Square.  As most of you know, our honoree this year is Bob
Miller, a very deserving recipient.  

President Dave Armstrong has also asked that I remind you of our big,
upcoming fundraiser event, in conjunction with the Community Child Care
Center.  It will take place on November 18, at a mansion on the ocean.  If
you have not volunteered to help out, in some capacity, please see Dave next
week.  He is looking for more volunteers.  Let's make this as successful as
last year.  

Today, I had the honor of introducing our guest speaker, Shell Marie Boyer,
Outreach Coordinator, Palm Beach County, for the Souper Bowl of Caring.  The
mission of this organization is to utilize the Super Bowl football game to
inspire groups, communities and businesses to fight hunger in their own back
yard. 

Ms. Boyer also has a lifelong commitment to wellness, having taught fitness
as her favorite hobby, for nearly 20 years.  She currently specializes in
yoga.  She proved that none of her audience was proficient in yoga, when she
asked for audience participation in a simple exercise.  Everyone was a good
sport, however.

She gave some very startling facts: In the U. S. there are 38 million hungry
people; 14 million of them are children.  One in seven has no access to
clean water.  Miami is the poorest, next to Detroit.  This should never
happen in the richest country in the world; do we not care?

In 1990, a simple prayer group in Columbia, S. C. turned a Super Bowl into a
Souper Bowl.  Last year, over 12,000 schools, congregations and businesses
led a National effort and donated over $4.8 million to food banks, soup
kitchens and other agencies focused on poverty and hunger.  

This is a wonderful effort to feed the hungry; it culminates, for the year,
on Super Bowl Day, February 4, 2007, Super Bowl XLI, the biggest one-day
sporting event in the world.  

You are invited to team up with the Souper Bowl of Caring and Miami Dolphins
to transform the weekend of the big game into the nation's largest day of
