ROTARY RAMBLINGS

ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

October 10, 2006

This morning, at 7:30 a.m., President Dave Armstrong presided over another
very informative board meeting; much was accomplished. Those of you that
are unaware of how much time goes into leadership of this club, we invite
you to attend at least one of these meetings; you will be pleasantly
surprised. We were also delighted to have Dave Richards as our guest,
telling us about his recent trip to Honduras. He will be our noon speaker
on October 31; please be in attendance to hear what this man is doing in the
name of Rotary, as a humanitarian.

At noon, President Armstrong again presided over our meeting. Rev. Roger
Richardson, in his usual manner, gave the invocation, which made our food
much tastier.

In the absence of our illustrious song leader, Jimmy Weatherspoon, "Jack of
All Trades" Kurt Godfrey led the singing (thank goodness Bruce Williams was
there. Kurt, just kidding; you're much braver than I am.) We sang Happy
Birthday to Gerry Meeks, who proudly gave us $7.60???? We sang Happy
Anniversary to Dave O'Connell; he and Nancy are celebrating 53 years of
marriage. We also sang to Roger Richardson; he and Deborah are celebrating
three years of marriage. We wish all of you the very best.

Harvey Brown was aboard, to greet the visiting Rotarians and guests (before
leaving to hop the freight train). Our guests were Oswald Wertz, of
Germany, and Shane Moore. Dave Richards had his son, Elijah, with him
today. We also had Don Thorpe, DVM, back with us. We were glad to see
Arthur Reef back with us, after a harrowing experience, with Hurricane
Wilma. Hopefully things are getting back to normal, and that his wife is
also recuperating from her illness. Eric Meyer did two make ups at another
club; Tom Stanley and Jess Sowards (our cyber kids) did make ups online. We
thank each of you for taking time to care.

Fred Bonardi gave the stock market report. At noon, the DOW was up one
point; the NASDAQ up 23 points; the S&P up 3 points. Gold is down to
$575.00; oil is down to $59.00. The market looks good; Fred you are doing a
great job. He then switched hats, to give the Sergeant at Arms report. Sam
Altdoerfer is back!! He generously donated $20.00 toward the popcorn fund.
John Arnold is back! He donated $10.00, because his son is visiting with
him. Fred collected a total of $191.00 today. The popcorn popper fund now
exceeds $1,375.00; we're getting there.

Nick Loeb donated $5.00 today to announce an invitation: Nick Loeb and Anna
Pettersson invite you to a cocktail party at their home this Friday, October
13, 6:30-8:30 p.m. to introduce you to KIDS IN DISTRESS. RSVP to Judy @
561-272-9619, Ext. 1603.

President Armstrong went over the "Rules of Attendance" for the club, today.
Some of the requirements are: Attendance 60%; Use forms for absence; Rule 85
(age, plus years of service). See him for more detailed information.

Our District Picnic will be held at John Prince Park, October 29, 1-5 p.m.
Price for adults: $10.00; children under 12, $5.00. A sign up sheet is in
our foyer.

Our Holiday Party will be held at the Delray Beach Golf Club Restaurant
again this year, on Thursday, December 7.

On Tuesday, November 21, 11:30 a.m. we will hold our prestigious Service
Above Self Award, at Old School Square. As most of you know, we will be
honoring one of Delray Beach's most outstanding citizens, Bob Miller.

Camille, from Community Child Care Center spoke briefly today, to tell more
about out upcoming fundraiser event, being held on November 18. She told
us it will be held at 1171 S. Ocean Blvd., at the home of Catherine and
Stuart Wiley. Cocktails will start at 6:30 p.m. Dinner will be served
thereafter. There will be top-notch raffles. They are looking for sponsors
to help underwrite the costs; your name will be printed in the program. If
this is something you can do, please contact Dave Armstrong, immediately.

Fred Bonardi gave us all a good smile today. He had printed the 1930
Delray, FLA phone book for each of us. No, it wasn't too large a task; it
consisted of ONE page! I did see "Simon, A. A., S. E. 1st Ave." Does
anyone know who that is? (I bet I do.) This is priceless; thanks, Fred.

Today was a very unusual treat for all of us. Our mystery guest was none
other than the acclaimed Bruce Williams, on piano. He gave us a beautiful
repertoire of familiar show tunes, and old favorites, in a breathtaking
concert. Many of us hear his music as we enter the room each week, but
nothing like what he performed today. Bruce has played around Delray Beach
since 1953. He has led music in churches and schools throughout the area.
I have heard him in some fancy nightclubs in the area, as well. We are so
fortunate to have such a talented man as one of our Rotarians. When he had
finished, he exclaimed: "Whew, I haven't worked that hard in years." Thank
you, Bruce.

Next week, our guest speaker will be one of our newest members, Mike
Campbell, with Habitat For Humanity. I regret that I will miss this
wonderful program. I will be in Gatlinburg, TN, enjoying a high school
class reunion, and the lovely, breathtaking, autumn colors of the Smoky
Mountains. Sue Miller has graciously volunteered to write the "Ramblin's"
in my absence, for next week. We are still looking for a volunteer for the
following week, October 23.
